Ohio high school football kicks off Thursday night with several teams scheduled to match up in a bit of a preview of the upcoming Friday and Saturday games. There isn't a bigger Thursday night matchup in the Buckeye State than Avon v. St. Ignatius. Both teams are stacked and loaded with great prospects on both sides of the ball, especially on defense.

The key matchup will be how St. Ignatius' elite prospects on offense go up against Avon's outstanding Division I prospects.

Tight end Quinn Kennedy is a very good receiver who can catch and get upfield. Quarterback Daniel Chalhoub, who stands at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, has a solid arm and throws the deep ball with good touch and timing. Avantage: St. Ignatius.

St. Ignatius will need to score points against the defending state champions to have a shot, and offensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1179359' first='Mike' last='Vanderoord'], a Pittsburgh commit, will be a key cornerstone for the offensive line. He will certainly have his hands full with defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1703200' first='Lance' last='Dawson'], a Cincinnati commit for Avon. Other key returners for the Avon defense are safety [player_tooltip player_id='730825' first='Jakob' last='Weatherspoon'], a North Carolina commit, and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1410814' first='Ryan' last='Stolarski'] who is committed to Miami-Ohio. This is a defense that can smother opponents and wreck havoc on quarterbacks.

Ignatius has a talented, under-the-recruiting-radar safety in [player_tooltip player_id='402341' first='Jayshon' last='Thomas'] who flies to the ball against the run. Kennedy also doubles as a linebacker, so expect his presence to be felt on both sides of the ball. Keep an eye on 2027 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1677589' first='James' last='Conrad'].

Expect a defensive slugfest. Prediction: Avon 14, St. Ignatius 10
