The Sapulpa Chieftains were a late addition to Class 6A-2 in 2024. They were originally slated to be in Class 5A but an emergency redistricting shuffle bumped them back up to 6A-2. And it was a roller coaster of a season after that. The year began with the Chieftains starting 0-3 so not exactly the start you draw up in the summertime. But all three games were non-district games so it didn't mean a thing for playoff seeding. And when district play began, the Chieftains turned things around. Following their 0-3 start, Sapulpa won four straight games, sitting at 4-0 in the district standings in late October. They lost a close game to Putnam City North and then fell to Muskogee and Sand Springs in the final three games. The 2024 regular season featured two different three-game losing streaks with a four-game winning streak sandwiched between. Nevertheless, they punched their ticket to the playoffs and beat Lawton Eisenhower 46-31 in the first round. It was Sapulpa's first playoff victory in two decades. The following week, the Chieftains went on the road and lost to Choctaw. The Yellowjackets went on to capture the Class 6A-2 state championship. The season came to an end with a 5-7 record and the roller coaster finally stopped. It was an up and down year from the start but the Chieftains finally ended their playoff losing streak and now come into 2025 with the majority of their starters back and a lot of optimism.

2025 OUTLOOK

That optimism starts from a place where 15 of the 22 starters return for the Chieftains. Offensively, six starters are back for Sapulpa, including the quarterback and plenty of pieces along the offensive line. Last year, the Chieftains were running back by committee and that will be the case again this fall. They'll need a few more names to step up in the skill department but the Chieftains have the potential to be incredibly improved on the offensive side of the ball. They are just two years removed from having a unit that averaged north of 40 points per game. They could flirt with that number this season. Defensively, that's where the Chieftains are incredibly strong and that's a major reason why they could end up being a top five team in Class 6A-2 this season. Nine starters are back for a defense that gave up a little over 20 points per game last season but they played really well throughout the year. The front seven is absolutely nasty and if a team isn't set on the offensive line, the Chieftains are going to be able to take advantage of that. The combination of experience, production and pure raw talent makes this front seven a very interesting unit to watch throughout the 2025 football season. Now, when you look at the schedule, they'll be tested in the first three weeks but as we learned last season, start 3-0, start 0-3, it doesn't matter. District play is what gets you to the playoffs and the east side district in Class 6A-2 is more wide open this fall. It will more than likely come down to the final two games of the year against Muskogee and rival Sand Springs. But the Chieftains are a dark horse district title contender.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1035272' first='Braddox' last='Broughton'] is on our shortlist of players to watch from the standpoint of big jumps from one year to the next. Broughton started for Edison as a freshman and then moved to Sapulpa last year. In his first season as Sapulpa's starter, Broughton threw for a little over 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. Not bad production from a first year starter in a new environment. Now, with a full offseason under his belt and a year of experience with the Chieftains, we think that Broughton could take a major leap forward, becoming one of the better quarterbacks in Class 6A-2. He's definitely trending in the right direction.

Senior defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='1332248' first='DeShon' last='Koch'] has been a player that the Chieftain coaches have been excited about for a little over a year now. Around this time last year, those coaches were telling us that Koch had the potential to be their breakout star and after watching what Koch did during his junior season, we have to say that they were right. Koch was an absolute nightmare for opponents last season, finishing the year with 11 sacks and was a pressure machine, coming off the edge. This season, Koch looks to be one of the best defensive ends in Class 6A-2. He'll also be getting reps on offense, as a power back in short yardage and goal line situations.

Senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1717582' first='Jarrett' last='Hammer'] will set the tone on the line of scrimmage for the Chieftains this season. Hammer comes into this year as one of the more experienced players on the Sapulpa roster, offense or defense. Hammer will be a three-year starter for the Chieftains up front and like we mentioned earlier in the preview, we think that this offensive line could really help pave the way for Sapulpa to be pretty explosive on the offensive side of the ball. Hammer has good size and the experience is a big key to his success. There isn't going to be much that happens this season that Hammer hasn't already experienced.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1717575' first='Jayce' last='McIntosh'] is returning to lead this Sapulpa defense. The Chieftains have some dudes on the defensive side of the ball but to play well as a unit, they need a leader on the field and McIntosh appears to be that guy for Sapulpa. Last season, McIntosh was the leading tackler on their defense with a little over 100 on the season. He'll go into this season looking to match or hopefully exceed that production from 2024. With nine starters back, we've mentioned how this Sapulpa defense has the chance to be special. If they are indeed just that, look for McIntosh to be a big reason why.

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1717571' first='Levi' last='Jensen'] is a player that appears to be ready to take the next step this season. Last year, around this time, Jensen wasn't really on our radar going into the 2024 football season. That quickly changed. Jensen would be one of several running backs that had solid 2024 campaigns. Jensen finished the season with nearly 750 yards and ten touchdowns. He split carries last season and will more than likely be splitting carries with a few different guys in 2025. Sapulpa's coaches are very confident in the abilities of their running back room. Jensen is just one of the guys that will be attacking defenses this fall.

Sept. 5th - Tahlequah
- Sapulpa renews their early season series with Tahlequah to kick off the 2025 football season. The Chieftains host the Tigers and this is a Tahlequah team that comes into the year with some notable players and will be a test right out of the gates. Sapulpa fell 24-14 in last year's season opener.
Sept. 12th - Yukon
- It's 6A-1 VS 6A-2 as the Chieftains welcome in Yukon in week two. These two met for the first time in recent memory last year, with Yukon getting a 10-7 victory at home. Both of these teams are playoff hopefuls in their respective classes and both teams have some interesting players to watch.
Sept. 19th - AT Grove
- Sapulpa's non-district slate finishes up with a road trip to Grove in week three. The Chieftains lost to the Ridgerunners 16-6 last season and it was their second meeting in three years, with the other loss coming in the 2022 playoffs. Grove will look different with a first year head coach.
Sept. 26th - AT Capitol Hill
- District play will open up for Sapulpa with a road trip to Oklahoma City as they face off with Capitol Hill. When the Chieftains moved up to 6A-2 last year, it introduced them to several new opponents with Capitol Hill being one of them. They beat the Red Wolves 68-12 last season.
Oct. 3rd - Bartlesville
- The Chieftains host Bartlesville in week five. These two teams have met every year since 2020, whether it's in district play now or non-district play before. The Chieftains beat the Bruins 35-28 last season and they extended their winning streak against Bartlesville to six straight wins.
Oct. 10th - AT Putnam City West
- The Chieftains go back on the road and head to Oklahoma City for the second of three trips this season. They face Putnam City West in week six to kick off the second half of the regular season. Last year, they beat the Patriots 58-0 and that was their largest margin of victory in 2024.
Oct. 16th - Ponca City
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Sapulpa will welcome in Ponca City. Last season, the Chieftains beat the Wildcats 28-7. That was the first meeting between these two teams since they were district foes from 2014-2019. Sapulpa has won four out of the last five meetings.
Oct. 24th - AT Putnam City North
- Sapulpa goes on the road to OKC to square off with Putnam City North. Last season was the first time these two teams had met on the gridiron in recent memory. The Panthers would win an incredibly low-scoring game 7-3. The Chieftains want to win here to pick up momentum heading into week nine.
Oct. 31st - Muskogee
- On a Halloween night in week nine, the biggest two-week stretch of the season begins with a home game against Muskogee. The Chieftains lost 57-7 to Muskogee last year, in their first meeting since 2019. But this year's Muskogee team will look completely different from the 2024 version.
Nov. 7th - AT Sand Springs
- The annual Highway 97 rivalry game takes place in week ten as the Chieftains will head north up to Sand Springs. The Chieftains are hungry to turn things around in this series, that's been controlled by the Sandites for the last decade. Sapulpa lost 20-0 last year and that was the ninth straight loss.

NOTABLE

Sapulpa punched their ticket to the playoffs in 2024 and it was their seventh consecutive playoff trip. And coincidentally, that's the longest playoff streak in program history. However, none of the previous six trips ended with any positive results. Coming into the 2024 football season, Sapulpa had lost nine consecutive playoff games, dating back to when the streak started in the 2005 6A quarterfinals. Whether it was Class 6A, Class 6A-2 or Class 5A, the Chieftains had been one and done in the postseason. But when they knocked off Lawton Eisenhower in the first round last season, that ended that losing streak. Now, they have shifted their focus to making it back to the playoffs in 2025 and winning more than one game. And looking back at their playoff history, that would be a program first. Sapulpa has never won more than a single playoff game in school history. They're looking to make more history in 2025.
