We're in between series at Prep Redzone, so I wanted to step back and look at some players across the state who I think could have huge seasons, but have a lot to prove. This isn't an indictment, but a challenge. These are players either being overlooked or not getting the recognition they deserve.

A strong season would go a long way toward moving the needle in their recruitments. So, I'm stepping back to look at some quarterbacks with a lot to prove, and the talent to take that next step. Here are five 2027 QBs with the most to prove.

High-Upside 2027 QBs

[player_tooltip player_id='1328747' first='Lex' last='Sevilla'], Middle Creek

Sevilla has been on our radar for years, but hasn't ever had full-time quarterback duties at the varsity level. That should change this season and I'm interested to see how high Sevilla can raise the bar. He's a talented dual-threat passer with legitimate speed. Sevilla averaged 10 yards a carry last season in limited varsity snaps. He also had a 15-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio on the JV team as a sophomore, evidence of his arm talent and decision making.

[player_tooltip player_id='1030649' first='Ge'arey' last='Johnson'], Mt. Zion Christian

Johnson has had two strong seasons as a starter for Mt. Zion. I want to see him continue to develop as he flashed next level abilities as a sophomore. If he can show more consistency as a pocket passer on a down-to-down basis I'll be ecstatic as that's an area of his game that is slowly improving. He plays at a lower level than some of his similarly-ranked counterparts, so I need to continue to see him show flashes of elite ability against his competition. I'm already a big fan, but think he could take another step as a junior.

[player_tooltip player_id='485965' first='Bryson' last='Gray'], Millbrook

Gray has elite size and potential, as evidenced by a recent North Carolina offer, and I'm looking for him to take the next step on the field. He has flashed accuracy, but completed less than 50% of his passes last season, a number I expect him to easily clear in 2025. He's also a plus-athlete, even if the rushing stats don't show it yet. Gray is a case of simply waiting patiently for the numbers to match the talent and potential. When that happens, he could fly up our board.

[player_tooltip player_id='1301805' first='Hudson' last='Irwin'], Northwest Cabarrus

Matt Morrow and I are in agreement on Irwin: he has college traits even if his 2024 stats weren't eye-popping. Matt said Irwin looked more comfortable at the CFI Showcase this spring than he did at times last fall and I think confidence will be important for the high-upside passer this fall. If he can continue to grow as a passer, he should average well over the 102 yards per game he put up last season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1625015' first='Christian' last='Ormandy'], Garner Magnet

Ormandy is one of the best athletes behind center in the state. While he's not just a runner at quarterback, I'd like to see him continue to progress as a passer. He has plenty of arm talent, but he's definitely a run-first guy right now. If he can improve his accuracy and decision-making, it will open more running lanes for Ormandy and a talented rushing attack as well.
