It's become more true by the day that we have a new football position within our scouting circle and that's the “athletes”. You have prospects these days that can honestly develop and excel at multiple positions. Now do most guys eventually grow into one specific position, yes they do but that doesn't mean you don't have players that aren't talented enough to be considered for different roles.

The rising junior class here in Tennessee has plenty of guys that fit the bill of an “athlete” that has the talent and upside to become a producing starter at multiple positions on the next level. The first guy that comes to mind from this position has to be Lausanne two-way talent [player_tooltip player_id='1556594' first='Lawrence' last='Britt'].

Holding multiple Power Four offers in-hand already, Britt has quickly turned into one of the top players coming out of the #TN2027 class due to his natural athleticism and explosive speed. Several of his offers are for wide receiver and I myself can see him developing on offense but I also see a scenario where Britt becomes a college guy at safety. Seeing how his body grows over the next year will go a long way towards the Lynx playmaker solidifying himself at one specific position.

Westview junior [player_tooltip player_id='1422977' first='Miles' last='Brown'] had a breakout year last Fall where he produced big numbers at both receiver and defensive back. College programs have already taken notice due to this guy's upside on either side of the ball. [player_tooltip player_id='1641243' first='Malik' last='Dean, Jr'] from Germantown jumped on the scene this off-season due to his strong physical traits and natural athletic abilities. The Red Devils junior has a lot of development to go but I like the skills and upside, especially on defense.

During his time at Melrose, junior [player_tooltip player_id='1103458' first='Tavarco' last='Jackson'] has played several roles for his Golden Cats team and I can see where his potential could be used best on either side of the ball. The more I scout this Memphis area prospect, the more I like him as a college “X” or “Y” level receiver.

Rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='904730' first='Velon' last='Henderson'] is one of the more interesting “athlete” cases I have from a scouting point of view. For a long time, I have seen the Oakland two-way talent as a receiver but the more I watch his film and watch him grow, the more I'm liking him as a defensive back, a potential cover corner. South Pitt prospect [player_tooltip player_id='1577095' first='Dayon' last='Cooper'] handled quarterback duties last year but this season, he should step into a bigger role at receiver and safety, which are the two positions I have him scouted for.

Keep ears out for [player_tooltip player_id='1659259' first='Jaheim' last='Smith'] over the next six months as I'm expecting him to be a breakout star that will shine on both sides of the ball. The Covington two-way talent shows near elite athleticism with big time speed and quick feet that allow him to excel at both running back and field safety. Smith needs to continue adding more size but the playmaking skills are certainly there.

Two Memphis juniors to know about and watch this Fall are [player_tooltip player_id='1675675' first='Christian' last='Coleman'] from Collierville and [player_tooltip player_id='1675680' first='La'Quan' last='Higginbottom'] from Germantown. Both these guys are new on the scene but have added offers over these off-season months that immediately put them on the radar. I'm looking forward to learning more about these guys as I see big time athletic traits from both.

Alcoa backer [player_tooltip player_id='904844' first='Micah' last='Jones'] is another guy I'm expecting to have a big junior season. He played a key role on the Tornadoes championship last year as the bruising back on offense and a hard hitting safety on defense. My scouting eyes like Jones as an eventual college linebacker but I could see a team or two liking his upside for running back.

Staying out in the East Tennessee region, three guys in [player_tooltip player_id='1467318' first='Martavius' last='Smith'] from Cleveland, [player_tooltip player_id='1427702' first='Taren' last='Claridy'] out of Greeneville and [player_tooltip player_id='817961' first='Jamerius' last='Abuhania'] from Alcoa have the physical traits and skill sets to develop at either receiver or defensive back. Smith is someone I like best on defense while I can see Claridy and Abuhania developing on either side of the ball.

Pope Prep junior [player_tooltip player_id='1529629' first='DeVaughn' last='Cantrell'] is someone to keep tabs on this Fall. Standing 6 '3 200 pounds, the Knights two-way talent has yet to really make his mark on the field but sports all the physical tools to do so. If Cantrell develops like I think he can, his ranking and stock will certainly rise.

[player_tooltip player_id='1580800' first='Jordan' last='Hunt'] from Chester Co. and [player_tooltip player_id='1660984' first='Ja'Tari' last='Davis'] out of Chattanooga Prep are two athletic two-way skill guys that have a lot of development to go when it comes to their bodies but present upside as playmakers. I can see where Hunt stays on offense at receiver while Davis is someone I could see sticking on defense at corner or safety.

One of the more interesting prospects from this position group for me to follow this Fall will be Page junior [player_tooltip player_id='1646108' first='Drew' last='Rempel']. The Patriots athlete has shown clips this off-season at both quarterback and tight end but this coming football year, it looks like Rempel will be handling the duties behind center. I'm very curious to see how he progresses at quarterback because I certainly see the upside for Rempel at tight end.

Stone Memorial receiver/defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1608559' first='Kadyn' last='Page'] is a small town guy that shows flashes of playmaking abilities from both sides of the ball that could translate to the college game. A big junior season and further development next off-season will go a long way towards boosting his overall stock.

[player_tooltip player_id='1103039' first='Jacorrion' last='Tramble'] from Notre Dame, [player_tooltip player_id='898264' first='Zach' last='Happney'] out of Anderson Co. and [player_tooltip player_id='1634457' first='Cole' last='Smith'] from Greeneville are three East Tennessee based, big bodied prospects that have the physical traits to develop at multiple positions. Tramble is the one of the three that I could see carving out a role at receiver, safety or possibly linebacker down the road. He is an athletic guy with good length and a wide radius that I'm sure college coaches would enjoy developing.

Happney is a big dude that is beginning to form himself into an outside receiver that presents a threat in the red zone. I can still see a scenario where the Mavericks junior grows into a possible linebacker due to his 6'3 190 pound body. Smith has the looks of a key starter for his Green Devils team this year as a two-way guy that works the slot at receiver and makes violent hits from his safety role on defense.

This position will grow deeper over the coming year as new prospects jump on my radar and begin to show themselves as college level players. I like the looks so far for the “athletes” as it's a talented crop of guys that I foresee building their athletic profiles further and become worthy of more interest.
