With the offseason comes the inevitable highs and lows of the 9ish long months waiting, anticipating, and itching for some padded football. There are some dark times, that's forsure, but one of the highs is undoubtedly the outdoor track season, and one could argue that besides in-season performance and in-person camp workouts, the track & field season is the most surefire way to track and evaluate a prospect's athleticism and raw ability. Not only that, a strong track time or throw can alter and kickstart a player's recruitment like no other, and we've seen Minnesota prep football players greatly benefit from the outdoor's season wealth of potential and possibility in the past few cycles specifically. [player_tooltip player_id='234761' first='Luke' last='Emmerich'], now balling out at the University of Wisconsin, was coming off a knee surgery that saw him miss his junior season, but a rocket-fueled 10.69 100M time propelled him into double-digit P4 offers before he shut down his recruitment and inked with the Badgers. Jalen Smith from Mankato West shot up some recruiting boards after running a 10.80 flat the cycle prior, and Forest Lake's monster of a 2026 DL [player_tooltip player_id='592117' first='Howie' last='Johnson'] has been elevated to 4star status no-doubt due to his eye-tracking throws on the shot put and discus. This spring, we're seeing more speed and power than usual coming out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, with dozens of Minnesotans buffing their recruiting resumes and raising their stock thanks to their outdoor track and field season's accomplishments. Check out some of Minnesota's prep football standout's Best Track Times of 2025, so far, below.

--

Top 10 Track Performances of 2025 so far

1) [player_tooltip player_id='592117' first='Howie' last='Johnson'] (Forest Lake) 2026. DE. 6'3, 265 lbs.

Howie doing what Howie does, and that is creating headlines. Whether it's riling up Gophers Twitter with videos of his weight room escapades, imposing warm up videos (hello, LineofScrimmage), or tossing a 12 lb. shot put further than anyone in the state, Johnson has all the makings of an in-state superstar once he gets to Dinkytown, and track & field measureables are as straightforward of a metric as it gets. Johnson has thrown a 58'10” shot put and 174'4” discus, both good for #1 in the state this outdoor season, and has a good amount of meets left to try and best that mark before the state tournament concludes. Near 60' in the shot put is bordering on elite, and from everything we know and have seen from Johnson in his still-budding prep career, we aren't surprised. 24/7Sports recently bumped Johnson up to 4star status on their 2026 Big Board, yet another well-deserved notch in the belt for the Forest Lake product.

https://twitter.com/Howie_Johnson92/status/1915033556348215701

2) [player_tooltip player_id='1104940' first='Carson' last='Heimer'] (Byron) 2026. ATH. 6'1, 190 lbs.

The [player_tooltip player_id='1104940' first='Carson' last='Heimer'] train still hasn't quite left the station, as the Byron junior has only recently earned that coveted first Division 1 offer (shoutout South Dakota), and there is still room to jump on the hype train before it's too late. A consistent 4.4-4.5 kid on the hand times during camp szn, Heimer did an excellent job of padding his recruiting profile by adding a BLAZING 10.84 100M PR this outdoor season, along with two 10.98s, to really solidify some fantastic wheels on both the gridiron and track. Heimer has also added a 22.09 200M and 21'9'5" long jump for good measure, and frankly, given his combination of film, athletic measurements, and in-person evals, I'm surprised more Missouri Valley schools aren't knocking down the door of the Bears for Heimer's signature, especially given the fact that [player_tooltip player_id='831981' first='Colin' last='Hansen'] is heading to Dinkytown to play for the Gophers soon. Great job this spring, Carson.

https://twitter.com/carson_heimer8/status/1910870262477697282

3) [player_tooltip player_id='1368410' first='Eli' last='Diane'] (Wayzata) 2027. DE. 6'4, 260 lbs.

Making a huge debut on the 247Sports recently updated 2027 Big Board as the #115 overall prospect in the sophomore class, Diane showed why he can already be considered as an elite athlete for his age, tossing an incredible 58'2.25" PR in the shot put on May 2nd and following it with a 57'-02.50" shot put on May 7th. That's outstanding for a kid of his age, and Diane already has enough verified athletic data points behind him to justify a near Top 100 ranking in the nation as an underclassmen. His 2025 outdoor season only cements that fact.

https://twitter.com/EliDiane2027/status/1918467532551258136

4) [player_tooltip player_id='1255902' first='Pierce' last='Petersohn'] (Triton) ATH. 6'4, 195 lbs.

Dodge Center product Petersohn, if you aren't already familiar, is one of the freakiest athletes Minnesota has produced in the last decade+, rising slowing and methodically up recruiting boards around the country, culminating in an explosive junior offseason on the recruiting trail. With the likes of Penn State, Iowa State, Northwestern, and Minnesota firmly in the mix going into the summer, Petersohn has only cemented the fact that he has rare athleticism at his size and can add a freaky element to a suitor's 2026 recruiting class. At 6'4, 195+, the Triton junior has PRed with 11.03 100M, 22.95 200M 49.33 400M, and added a solid, but not a PR, 6'6” high jump on May 10th. Petersohn's 400M mark also set a new school record at Triton High School, one of many records Petersohn is poised to reset in the Cobra's record books.

https://twitter.com/PiercePetersohn/status/1921371747032412364

5) [player_tooltip player_id='924241' first='Tyler' last='Curnow'] (Stillwater) 2026. OL. 6'3, 265 lbs.

Curnow has done an excellent job of raising his stock, developing his game, and sharpening his athleticism this offseason. In fact, it's been about as good as anyone in the state. Curnow had a good showing during one of last summer's RTB PJ Fleck Golden Gophers camp in Dinkytown, especially in the testing department, but he's really strengthened his game since then, highlighted by an eye-popping 58'7” shot put this 2025 outdoor season. What a throw! Curnow has added a 177'0" discus for good measure, spotlighting his explosiveness and power as well as any prospect in the state. Bemidji State has already offered, and Curnow has also recently clocked a couple 4.5s and as low as 4.39 pro-agility shuttles while training with ETS, and after giving up 0 sacks last fall for Stillwater, look for Curnow to have an All-Metro type-season as a senior. Already an established Top-100 prospect in Minnesota's 2026 class, Curnow has made the case for yet another big bump in the rankings with camp szn bright on the horizon.

https://twitter.com/tyler_curnow/status/1916107790268977661

6) [player_tooltip player_id='923833' first='Levi' last='Harris'] (Elk River) 2026. ATH. 5'11, 170 lbs.

Arguably the most dazzling, as well as valuable, individual performers of the 2024 season, there was a ton of on-field evidence that Harris possessed outstanding speed, but Harris still had the most to gain of nearly any 2026 prospect in the Land of 10,000 Lakes going into the spring. There were rumors of him running an 11.3 as a freshman, and as mentioned, he's certainly fast on film, leading to offers from Murray State, New Mexico, and Air Force this winter and early this spring, but to really make some noise on the recruiting trail and crack into that next echelon of recruiting, especially as a triple-option QB, Harris was going to have to dazzle this spring, and dazzle he has. The junior went 11.17 in early April, then 11.05 later in the month, but has since cracked that sub-11-second mark and went 10.93 and 10.89 in May. South Dakota and Army-West Point have offered since the track times and begun to come out, and it's not a stretch to think that this really raises his chance of that potential hard-earned first P4 offer, and at the very least more FBS looks. The Elk River 100M record is 10.80, by the way...

https://twitter.com/elks_recruits/status/1922416429292265886

7) [player_tooltip player_id='1248622' first='Carter' last='Schwartz'] (Mankato East) 2027. DL. 6'2, 220 lbs.

I was pleasantly surprised to see sophomore Schwartz, already established as one of the better pass rushers in the 2027 class, put up some eye-popping shot put numbers as a young sophomore this spring. Schwartz has been rewriting the Mankato East history books this 2025 outdoor season, originally breaking the shot put record with a 55'0.25” throw for a school record on April 3rd, then besting it with a 56'8" toss later that month and a PR of a 56'9.5” shot put on May 13th at the Mankato East Triangular. Additionally, he set the Cougars discus record with a 164'1" on April 22nd at the Big 9 Triangular in Austin. Talk about an added dimension of power and strength that we weren't expecting from the sophomore DE and PRzMN Showcase veteran. Schwartz has made a can't-beat case for a big rankings bump with the summer camp circuit bright on the horizon.

https://twitter.com/CSchwartz2009/status/1922851367397273957

8) [player_tooltip player_id='1292281' first='Martin' last='Sleen'] (Hermantown) 2027. RB. 5'11, 175 lbs.

I gotta be honest, I'm not used to have as much skill talent on our hands; thank you 2027 class! Sleen, a bonafide speedster and playmaker, as well as top-tier prospect, continues to add to his impressive athletic resume of verified measureables this outdoor track & field season. Sleen has gradually improved on his 100M times throughout his sophomore spring, going 11.32 to 11.10 to 10.97 in the 100M, the last of which came on May 17th at the Steve Kerzie Invitational, and has added a 22.65 200M, 41'7" triple jump, and 19'3.25" long jump throughout his prolific spring on the track. That 10.97 100M time is an in-your-face plus athletic data point, and the raw speed more than shows up in his sophomore tape, making him an "when" as opposed to an "if" in terms of D1 offers and potential. If this kid was in a lot of other states in the Midwest, he'd be hotter on the recruiting trail. Don't sleep on Minnesota athletes.

https://twitter.com/MartinSleen27/status/1924626402097139774

9) [player_tooltip player_id='1306596' first='Hudson' last='Clarksean'] (Mankato West) 2027. ATH. 6'2, 200 lbs.

Clarksean is already one of the bigger unicorns I've covered in my time as a full-time scout for PrepRedzone/NFN. Recently named one of the 2027 classes "Most Versatile" prospects, coming in as a 200 lb. halfback who primarily moves mass as a blocker on the offensive side of the ball. An immediate eye-catcher last summer during the camp circuit who was head-and-shoulders above his peers in terms of overall size and muscle definition, Clarksean set a good foundation for himself on the gridiron as a sophomore, winning at the contact point and showing off tons of physicality, but he's also produced one of the best and most dynamic track showings this 2025 outdoor season. As a 200 pound sophomore, Clarksean has popped off PRs of a 11.48 100M, 23.34 200M, and 46'11" shot pit, a combination of which is hard out in the wild, especially as a kid of his size. Clarksean may be a tougher one to project to the college level, but boy oh boy, has he verified some speed and explosiveness this offseason. Look for him to climb up the rankings in an upcoming update here shortly.

https://twitter.com/HudsonClarksean/status/1923043081491751257

10) [player_tooltip player_id='1528749' first='James' last='Kopfmann'] (Chanhassen) WR. 6', 160 lbs.

Someone is due for a rankings bump! Kopfmann is absolutely one of the most underrated prospects in both Minnesota's and the Midwest's 2026 class. With route running and raw explosiveness more than evident on his junior tape, Kopfmann has blown the roof off his speed evaluation this 2025 Outdoor Season, as the Chanhassen junior has PRed with eye-popping 10.75 100M, 21.84 200M, and 49.79 400M to highlight some gamebreaking speed and upside when projecting to the next level. Luke Emmerich Luke Emmerich Luke Emmerich 6'2" | 200 lbs | DB Monticello | 2025 State MN , now balling out at the University of Wisconsin, was coming off a knee surgery that saw him miss his junior season, but a rocket-fueled 10.69 100M time propelled him into double-digit P4 offers before he shut down his recruitment and inked with the Badgers. Jalen Smith from Mankato West shot up some recruiting boards after running a 10.80 flat the cycle prior, and Forest Lake's monster of a 2026 DL Howie Johnson Howie Johnson Howie Johnson 6'3" | 260 lbs | DL Forest Lake | 2026 State MN has been elevated to 4star status no-doubt due to his eye-tracking throws on the shot put and discus. This spring, we're seeing more speed and power than usual coming out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, with dozens of Minnesotans buffing their recruiting resumes and raising their stock thanks to their outdoor track and field season's accomplishments.
