I can't believe it's Championship Week! We at Prep Redzone have been following the season extremely closely. I know that my main job is to evaluate players, but I also find it extremely fun to follow the teams.

Well, we finally have the 8 championship matchups- here's a quick preview of each Friday Game! (D8, D6, D4, D2)

9:30 AM

Neither team had an easy road to Ford Field. Beal City has scraped by, winning its past three games by one score or less. Riverview GR has won its games a little more convincingly, but they still only won by 6 points in the semifinals and gave up 26 points to Manchester in the District Finals. On paper, Beal City has the better defense, but Riverview GR has the better offense.

My opinion? I think Riverview Gabriel Richard has the upper hand, but the D8 State Championship game is usually very close. Now, I'll quickly go over each team's +- and a major difference-maker on both sides.

I am incredibly excited for this Division 4 Championship! I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on this one. Both teams have been lights-out this postseason. Niles dominated every single game except for a comeback win against 11-1 Portland. Even against a red-hot South Christian team, the Niles offense was absolutely overwhelming, and the defense forced turnovers. Goodrich also easily won all of their games except for a 1-score victory against 9-2 Freeland in the District Finals.

Goodrich is going to have to get offensive and defensive production from a lot of areas this Friday. Jakoby could provide a ton of value on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, I'm confident that Jakoby will do well. He's a great between-the-tackles option and does a fair job at staying on his feet through contact. Niles is a very opportunistic defense, but they're not known for forcing a ton of 3-and-outs. So, I expect Jakoby to do well running up the middle- but he HAS to focus on ball security.

Defensively, Jakoby will need to make some tackles in space. Niles is excellent at blocking outside the tackles, and they're even better at staying up through contact. If Jakoby tackles consistently well, Goodrich has an excellent chance.

If Lansing Catholic stands a chance against Lumen, Braden is going to have to have an incredible performance.

Defensively, Braden needs to be aggressive, and he needs to tackle well. I'm very excited to see what Braden does against what is perhaps the best team he's played in his career.

7:00 PM

This is another excellent-looking State Championship matchup. I have yet to run a poll, but I'm pretty confident that most people would pick St. Mary's to beat Byron Center. Not so fast. For one, Byron Center's +93 playoff point differential is only 18 behind St. Mary's, and BC played a more difficult playoff schedule.
