Hopkins 57, Park of Cottage Grove 50

The Hopkins Royals are hot right now, pulling off their third straight victory last Friday night against Park, in what was a thrilling 57-50 victory for the home team. Neck and neck until the 4th quarter, when Hopkins went up 57-36, the Park Wolfpack put on a furious comeback and got the game to within 7 with 38 seconds left in the game, but the comeback was not meant to be. After 29 straight losses, the Royals are now officially a legit 6A competitor and are in the midst of a potential turnaround for the ages. The Royals are throwing the ball all over the field, with star hooper + wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1522278' first='Jayden' last='Moore'] once again having a massive game with 7 catches for 122 yards and 4 TDs. Hopkins 2026 RB Desmond Moody added 3 more TDs, and on the Park side, junior Kody Aikens rushed for 18, 120, and 4 TDs in the loss. Hopkins has Roseville this Friday, with Wayzata and Edina looming large to end the regular season. The Royals have shown they have firepower and can win tight ball games, but their old classic Lake rivals are heavyweights, so we'll see what kind of momentum Hopkins can bring into the end of the regular season. Stay tuned!

Lakeville South 36, Rochester Mayo 33

Nearly a massive win for Mayo, Lakeville South managed to hold on for a tight three-point victory against their 6A competitor from Rochester in what was a crazy 4th quarter. South went up 40 to 28 with 8:49 in the 4th, but the Spartans went on a tear, taking a 43 to 40 lead with 29 seconds left in the game on a Isaac Peterson to [player_tooltip player_id='1583318' first='Isaiah' last='Beale'] for a two-yard TD pass. However, South stormed down the with less than 30 seconds to go, scoring a [player_tooltip player_id='945336' first='Jonah' last='Shine'] TD rush with one second left on the clock. Crazy game for all involved. [player_tooltip player_id='945336' first='Jonah' last='Shine'] - a MSU-Moorhead commit - rushed 15 times for 111 yards and 2 TDs for South, and [player_tooltip player_id='1583318' first='Isaiah' last='Beale'] went for 21 carries for 134 and 2 TDs. Mayo QB Isaac Peterson went 24-28 for 252 yards and 2 TDs as well. Wish I could have been there.

North Branch 47, Duluth Denfeld 12

Duluth Denfeld, the home of Vikings legend CJ Ham, came into the North Branch game on a tear, sitting at 4-0 and going for no less than 48 points in any of their previous ball games. However, North Branch had something to say about the Hunters' unbeaten streak. The Vikings focused on Uncommitted Senior Sleeper [player_tooltip player_id='743296' first='Taye' last='Manns'] - a walking video game prior to this - holding him to 21 carries for 171 yards and a TD. North Branch put on a rushing show themselves, posting 513 yards in the win, with two rushers going over 100 yards, one going over 90, and two going over 80. Tyler Minke had 3 of the 6 TDs scored on the ground. North Branch also picked off two passes in the strong defensive effort. The Vikings are now 4-1, with their only loss coming to Pequot Lakes in Week 1 28-20. Denfeld is now 4-1 themselves, and looks to bounce back against Cloquet this Friday.

BOLD 58, Dawson-Boyd 26

An upset in Minnesota's Class A of competition, #9 BOLD came into Dawson-Boyd High School and put a hurtin' in Class A's #6 ranked Blackjacks 58-26. Dawson-Boyd has some serious weapons, including 6'7, 200 lb. WR [player_tooltip player_id='945927' first='Brayson' last='Boike'] - a Southwest MN State basketball commit - and 2026 Nathan Hansen, a serious RB/DB/ATH prospect in the junior class, but BOLD didn't care, and led by [player_tooltip player_id='1582826' first='Hudson' last='Vosika'], who rushed for 237 yards and 5 TDs in the win, took control early and never relented. Boike went for 10 catches for 148 yards and 3 TDs in the loss, and man, I wish that kid was playing football in college. BOLD's defense picked off two passes as well. BOLD takes on Yellow Medicine East (0-5) on Saturday and Dawson-Boyd travels to Canby (2-3) on Friday.

Lakeville North 36, Eagan 33

The best game of the weekend, Eagan High School - one of the best success stories of the 2024 season - nearly asserted themselves in the 6A state title conversation on Friday night, but failed to pull off the stunner, falling 36-33 to #1 ranked Lakeville North. The game was tight through three-quarters of play, but North used a [player_tooltip player_id='348783' first='Sam' last='Ripplinger'] TD run to take a 36-25 lead with 3:25 in the game, and although Eagan roared back with a [player_tooltip player_id='348721' first='Madden' last='Ison'] TD run less than a minute later to pull within three, they couldn't score those last points to complete the comeback. Eagan 2026 RB Logan Gilbertson scored TDs on the ground in the loss, and Ripplinger matched him with two TDs himself, as well as 28 carries for 121 yards.

Minnetonka 21, Shakopee 13

There's a full recap of the Minnetonka vs. Shakopee game I attended on the site, so I won't get into things too deep here. However, Minnetonka is a legit contender for a 6A state title, and this game's atmosphere was one of the biggest and best I've been to while covering MN high school football. Despite the tight score line, Minnetonka was in control of this ball game all four quarters, and their defense was relentless and physical, which matches their North-South, in-your-face running game on the other side of the ball. Shakopee has a ton of talent that was a joy to watch, but with 8,100 fans in attendance last Friday night in Minnetonka, with 90% of them being Skipper's fans, this night was all Minnetonka.

Mahnomen/Waubun 13, Red Lake County 12

Another big-time Class A showdown, both teams came into the matchup 4-0, and now #3 Mahnomen/Waubun almost saw their season take a turn for the worse. However, the Thunderbirds squeezed out the one-point W in the fourth quarter with a 4th quarter, go-ahead TD by Easton Bevins to put the ball game away. Red Lake County was 4-0 coming into the ball game, never scoring less than 39 points and never allowing their opponents more than 14, but they had a tough test against Mahnomen/Waubun and played well throwing for 205 yards and rushing for 66 against a tough opponent. This should serve Red Lake County later into sections and playoffs. Fun one up North last Friday night.
