Expert Analysis

Returners don’t always get the love they deserve, and Thome as an elite athlete falls into that category. Although he only played the first quarter he made his impact felt very quickly. Thome recorded over a 50-yard punt return, a filthy PBU on an out route, and a hard-headed tackle that stopped the receiver in his tracks. This dude is legit and easily among the top DBs in the state.

Thome is a big defensive back with good range. His length allows him to make fifty/fifty balls slanted towards the defensive side of the ball. He has good anticipation and knows when to attack the ball. Thome is a complete defensive back. He doesn’t make ‘business decisions’ like Deion Sanders likes to say when a defensive back makes a lame attempt at a tackle. Thome will put a hit on guys and uses his hands well to get off blockers. Defense is his calling card, but his athletic ability makes him a threat out wide on the offensive side of the ball and as a kick returner, too.

One thing that stands out immediately in Thome’s film is his exceptional tackling ability. He demonstrates great technique and reliability in tackling in the open field. Thome’s remarkable burst when closing on receivers allows him to disrupt passing plays, while his physicality at the catch point makes him a problem for receivers in contested situations. His football IQ is spotlighted in his ability to read the quarterback’s eyes and react quickly to plays, showcasing tremendous anticipation. Thome proves to be a dynamic presence on special teams, especially on kick returns, where his tough style of play and solid speed make him a valuable asset. Additionally, his understanding of route combinations enhances his defensive capabilities, positioning him as a versatile and impactful player throughout each snap while being a threat to lay a powerful hit at any moment.

fits the bill as a 6’2, 180 lb. CB with solid COD skills. He showed off that change of direction ability at our spring PrepRedzoneMN Showcase, where he posted a 4.6 short-shuttle and 7.18 L-drill. Also a three-sport athlete for the Komets, Thome debuts as our #49 overall ranked 2025 and our #4 DB in the latest update. NDSU reached out after August 1st with a recruiting graphic, and Thome also posted a 245 lb. bench press in late June to add onto his prowess as a cornerback. In off-man coverage, Thome shows off a smooth backpedal and doesn’t waste steps when breaking on the ball, mirrors route runners well and gets hip to hip quickly – both on underneath and deeper routes – and can stay on top of WRs going vertical and uses his size to his advantage when playing the ball in the air. I also like how he can flip his hips, and Thome shows good eye discipline, particularly when carrying WRs deep. He’s also a solid cut tackler as well and popped off some impressive runs offensively. The KM DB room is overflowing with talent in 2023, good luck throwing it on them!
