Each week on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we'll put a spotlight on one of, if not the very best game of the week. And this week, the slate is absolutely loaded so this is the second of two “Scene Setters” for week one. From a match-up breakdown to looking at each team and their top players, we'll get you completely covered! This week, one of the best games will see a #1 VS #2 showdown in Class 3A and a rematch of last year's state championship game as Lincoln Christian travels to Oklahoma City to face playoff rival Heritage Hall.

This showdown is a rematch of last year's Class 3A state championship game, won by Lincoln Christian and it's a renewal of what has been a very fun rivalry over the last five years. However, we've only seen these two meet in the playoffs so it'll be good to see them square off in the regular season. In fact, they've only met in either the semifinals or the state championship game. The Chargers will be opening their 2024 football season at home and they face a Lincoln Christian defense that is incredibly strong. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after going on the road and shutting out Victory Christian in week zero.

For Heritage Hall, they certainly haven't forgotten about how last season ended and there are plenty of starters in this match-up that were on the field when they had to settle for silver. The Chargers looked good two weeks ago when we watched them against really strong competition at the Carl Albert scrimmage. But opening the season against Lincoln Christian will really test this Heritage Hall squad. The Chargers are hungry to turn things around against Lincoln after they've lost the four straight head to head meetings. But this will be one of their tougher season openers in recent memory.

The defending champion Bulldogs came into this season as the preseason number one team and they've earned that right after their perfect season in 2023. But we'll be honest, we didn't know what this team would look like after they lost a lot to graduation. We knew the defense would be pretty good, specifically in the front seven but they had a lot of unproven guys on the offensive side of the ball. We don't have many doubts now after the Bulldogs went on the road and beat Victory Christian 56-0. Offensively, they looked just fine and defensively, well, it doesn't get much better than a shutout.

Below, we take a look at three players to watch from each side of the match-up.
HERITAGE HALL PLAYERS TO WATCH

[player_tooltip player_id='434307' first='Barrett' last='Travis'] - Senior Running Back

Heritage Hall has to replace (in our opinion) the best player in Oklahoma last season at the quarterback position. That's not an easy task but having experience returning at running back will certainly help. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='434307' first='Barrett' last='Travis'] has been that guy for the Chargers for a little over a year now. Even as a sophomore, despite not being the starter, Travis had an impact in some big games. Last season, he had a solid showing but this year, we expect to his production explode. And on Friday night, he'll have a huge test right out of the gate against a Lincoln Christian defense that is incredibly strong up front.

[player_tooltip player_id='206345' first='Conner' last='Quintero'] - Junior Quarterback

Heritage Hall has had a QB battle going all spring and summer and it appears that junior [player_tooltip player_id='206345' first='Conner' last='Quintero'] will be the guy on Friday night. If that's the case, there are few players that we're looking forward to seeing more in person this season than Quintero. Over the last two years, we've seen the junior signal caller at multiple camps and 7v7 tournaments in the offseason and he always looks the part. He's always one of the top quarterbacks. But Friday will be his first varsity start after spending his first two years at Enid and Stillwater. We're ready to see what he can do under the Friday night lights and this week will be a big challenge.

[player_tooltip player_id='480075' first='Hillman' last='Browne'] - Senior Defensive Lineman

We go to the defensive side of the ball for our final Charger to watch. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='480075' first='Hillman' last='Browne'] will lead the Heritage Hall defense from the line of scrimmage and that's a big key to Friday night's game. Lincoln Christian has a very inexperienced offensive line and if Browne and the Heritage Hall front can cause chaos, that will make things very interesting. Like last season, Lincoln Christian has a very balanced offense and a balanced rushing attack, throwing multiple running backs out there. Slowing down Lincoln's offense and getting stops will be a big key to avoid getting into a back and forth game on Friday night.

[player_tooltip player_id='602991' first='Braeden' last='Baker'] - Sophomore Running Back

Sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id='602991' first='Braeden' last='Baker'] is one of several running backs to keep an eye on this week. The Bulldogs ran for over 300 yards and five different players scored rushing touchdowns in their week zero win over Victory Christian. Baker was the leading rusher, finishing the night with nearly 100 yards and a touchdown. He leads a very balanced rushing attack and is ready to attack this season after seeing limited time last season behind two seniors at the running back position. Baker is also a player that we're familiar with after watching him in person at one of our camps and he's off to a great start this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1101281' first='Carter' last='Ricke'] - Junior Quarterback

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1101281' first='Carter' last='Ricke'] made his debut as QB1 of the Bulldogs last season and it wasn't a bad one. His night was over by halftime and he threw three touchdowns and added another touchdown on the ground. Lincoln Christian is one of those programs that always has a solid quarterback and this year is no different. Ricke got on our radar last season for his work on the defensive side of the ball at safety, but this year, it's all about what he can do at quarterback. He leads a very balanced Lincoln Christian offense that is looking to roll again this week. If Ricke and the Bulldogs roll to 50+ points again this week, 3A is in trouble.

[player_tooltip player_id='884992' first='Dawson' last='Fullingim'] - Senior Defensive Lineman

We mentioned earlier in this breakdown how the Lincoln Christian front seven was lights out coming into this season and that opinion has not changed after one game. Senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='884992' first='Dawson' last='Fullingim'] is one of several players within Lincoln Christian's front seven to keep an eye on throughout the game on Friday night. As mentioned, Heritage Hall's quarterback will be making his first career start so creating chaos on the line of scrimmage and making the Chargers uncomfortable will be important for the Bulldogs. We had our pick of several different guys for this spot but we're giving the nod here to Fullingim.
