The 2023 season for Heritage Hall can't help but bring up the “what if?” question. The Chargers made it to another state championship game and were ready to defend their title. They led Lincoln Christian 28-7 at one point but then the lead evaporated and their superstar quarterback went down with a torn ACL. The season ended with a silver ball and a sour taste after hopes of a second consecutive state title came crashing down. All in all, the Chargers would finish the year with a 13-1 record and there were definitely some milestones hit along the way. They were absolutely dominant at times with an offense that averaged nearly 50 points per game. They had massive wins over Millwood and Sulphur. They survived multiple scares from Marlow, including in the semifinal when they needed a game-winning field goal to punch their ticket to Edmond. The Chargers were once again one of the top teams in Class 3A. They began the season at #1 and they stayed there all year until the state title game. And it's not hyperbole when we say that their quarterback was an absolute superstar. He would earn our PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year award. And it's tough to come back from losing the best player in the state in a state championship game. But the Chargers are a team and more importantly a program that continues to be one of the best in the state. And we have no doubts that they are going to bounce back in a major way when the 2024 season kicks off this fall.

2024 OUTLOOK

The story of how the 2024 season will play out actually started in an Oklahoma City courthouse in April. Heritage Hall, along with several other OKC-area private schools won a case against the OSSAA that was going to push the Chargers up to Class 4A for 2024 and 2025. Because of that, we saw an emergency redistricting among all schools and the Chargers are back in Class 3A starting this fall. Now, Heritage Hall was still going to be a contender in Class 4A but they went from being a borderline top five team in Class 4A to possibly the favorite in Class 3A. And then you look at the team itself and while this team will have some new faces, they also bring back a lot of experience and talent in other areas. The Chargers bring back five starters on the offensive side of the ball. All eyes will be on the quarterback position and the Chargers will have a battle going to find out who QB1 will be this fall. Replacing a player like Bass is obviously not easy but the coaches liked their options at the position coming out of spring ball. Whoever the quarterback ends up being, he'll benefit from having an experienced running back in the backfield along with some talent at wide receiver. On defense, the Chargers also bring back five starters and it's a similar story as the offense. They have some very talented players returning but they will also have some new faces that are going to have to step up. And when you look at their schedule, those new faces will need to come along quickly. A state championship rematch with Lincoln Christian awaits in the season opener and they also have three other preseason-ranked teams within their district. But let's face it. This is a program that is one of the best in the state and they'll come into this season expecting to compete for another state title.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that whoever QB1 ends up being will have the benefit of an experienced running back in the backfield. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='434307' first='Barrett' last='Travis'] appears to be ready to take the next step and lead this Heritage Hall offense. As a sophomore, Travis wasn't the main running back but still had an impact. As a junior, Travis was the starter but Bass dominated the Heritage Hall running game. This season, it's Travis' turn to dominate the ground game and carry the Chargers and their offense. Last season, Travis put up some strong numbers and we expect him to not only exceed those this fall, but blow them out of the water.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1056547' first='Cal' last='Welker'] could very well end up becoming Heritage Hall's “X-factor” during the 2024 season. Welker returns for another year as a starter and a versatile player in all three phases of the game. Welker will bring a lot to the table as a wide receiver but don't overlook the importance of Welker in the kicking game. It was Welker's field goal in last year's semifinal round that sent the Chargers to the state championship game. So needless to say, Welker will play a very important role for the Chargers this season. On offense, Welker will provide the passing game with a reliable option at wide receiver. He could end up having a big 2024 season.

In addition to having Welker returning at wide receiver, the Chargers will also benefit from senior [player_tooltip player_id='1101129' first='Carter' last='Knowles'] coming back and he has a lot of momentum going into this season. Knowles gives Heritage Hall size at the wide receiver position and he has the potential to emerge as their top option in the passing game. He showed flashes of his abilities throughout the 2023 season and this fall will provide Knowles with a platform to take that next step as an overall playmaker. Heritage Hall will look to Knowles to bring consistency to the pass game for whoever the starting quarterback ends up being. It wouldn't surprise us if he ends up becoming their leading receiver.

If Welker is the “X-factor” then fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='480075' first='Hillman' last='Browne'] will be Heritage Hall's “swiss army knife” on both sides of the ball. Browne is a terrific athlete and can impact the game in a variety of ways. While he should see some playing time on offense and should be productive, we think his greatest impact will come on the defensive side of the ball. Browne was one of the team's leaders in sacks last season and he's looking to take that production to the next level this season. And it doesn't matter where Browne lines up on the defensive side of the ball, he finds a way to be productive. He'll be important to the front seven as the Chargers lost a lot of experience there.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='587270' first='Jerrod' last='Williams'] is another player that is primed for a big 2024 season as he's going into his third season as a starter. He first got on the radar with a dominant performance in the state championship game as a freshman. He followed that up with a strong sophomore campaign and now, college coaches are starting to notice the Heritage Hall standout. He's considered one of the top cornerbacks in the state's 2026 class and has already picked up a handful of offers to play at the next level. We're excited to see how Williams has elevated his game on the defensive side of the ball this season. But don't overlook him also playing some offense this fall.

Sept. 6th - Lincoln Christian
- It doesn't get much better than this when you're talking about season openers. #2 Heritage Hall will host #1 Lincoln Christian in week one in a rematch of last year's state championship game. These two 3A powerhouses have a terrific rivalry but all of their previous meetings have been in the playoffs. This will be the first ever meeting in the regular season and it could end up being the first of two match-ups. Lincoln has won the last four meetings, including last year's state title game.
Sept. 13th - John Marshall
Sept. 20th - AT Millwood
Sept. 27th - North Rock Creek
- Heritage Hall will open up district play in week four at home and the opponent is a new district foe but not a team that Heritage Hall is unfamiliar with. They'll face North Rock Creek in the district opener and this is a Cougar team that has high expectations after making their first ever playoff appearance last season. That playoff appearance ended in the first round against Heritage Hall so the Chargers know that North Rock Creek has had this game circled for a few months.
Oct. 4th - AT Anadarko
Oct. 10th - Kingfisher
Oct. 17th - AT Plainview
Oct. 25th - AT Pauls Valley
- In week eight, the Chargers will hit the road to face a Pauls Valley team in a game that could end up deciding the district championship. Pauls Valley is a top five team in the preseason rankings because they brought almost everybody back and added one of, if not the best running back in the state's 2025 class. So this is a completely different Pauls Valley team than the one that Heritage Hall beat 42-7 last season and have been dominant against in the last three years.
Nov. 1st - Purcell
Nov. 8th - AT Star Spencer

Head coach Brett Bogert is going into his tenth season as Heritage Hall's head coach and it's already been a decade of dominance. In his first nine seasons at the helm of Heritage Hall, Bogert has taken this program to new heights. They've won four state championships in the last nine years and have had five state title game appearances. They've won at least ten games in each of the last nine seasons under Bogert and have never had a season where they lost more than two games. Last season, Bogert also made history, becoming the winningest head coach in program history with his 110th victory as the man in charge of Heritage Hall. There is no doubt that this program has turned into one of the best in the state of Oklahoma and they show no signs of slowing down. Under Bogert, they've made it to five state championship games, winning four gold balls and only have eight losses total during his tenure. That's an unbelievable stat and is a great representation of why Bogert has quickly become one of the top coaches in the state.
