The Beggs Demons are incredibly hungry to start the 2024 football season and officially put 2023 behind them. For the first time since 2007, the Demons failed to make the playoffs and the 2023 season was one full of so much hope at the beginning but things came apart in district play. The final record was 4-6 but this was a team that began district play with a 3-1 record. The second half of the season was brutal for Beggs and it's something that they're looking to avoid in 2024. The season began with three wins in the first four weeks. The only loss came to Rejoice Christian in week two. They beat Hugo, Verdigris and then kicked off district play with a 22-point win over Westville. But they would go 1-5 the rest of the way with the only win coming over Okmulgee. A nice streak of playoff appearances would come to an end and David Tennison would retire following the season. Tennison told us before the season that the 2023 campaign would be his last so the record and outcome had nothing to do with that decision. But now, it's an opportunity for a fresh start and an opportunity to wipe the slate clean going into a new season, in a new class, with a new head coach. The 2023 season might have been a nightmare but Beggs is awake now and ready to climb back up the rankings and compete with the best in their class.

2024 OUTLOOK

While Beggs is going to have a new head coach this season, it's not a new name to the program. Tyler Blizzard returns to Beggs as their next head ball coach. He was an assistant with the Demons for several years before a short stint at Rejoice Christian. Now, he's back at Beggs and looking to return them to the program that we got used to seeing over the last seven years. Let's not forget that this is a program that is not that far removed from making five straight appearances in the semifinals, with a pair of state championship appearances during that stretch. And this year, they look to get back to making that a normal thing. They come into this year as a top ten team in our preseason rankings and they are a borderline top five team. But they'll have to prove they belong with the best of the best in the class. They have the talent and experience to do just that as eight starters are back on the offensive side of the ball. The Demons will need a new name to really fill the running back role but they are loaded everywhere else on offense. Defensively, they bring back nine starters and this is a unit that we really like in the Class 2A-2 landscape this fall. They are experienced, talented and very hungry to erase the memory of the 2023 season. Then you throw in the fact that the Demons are now in Class 2A-2 and the path to Edmond just got a little less crowded. While the district is a puzzling one, more on that later, we think that Beggs could end up reminding people why they are one of the top programs, no matter what class they are in.

The 2023 season was one that was tough for the Demons but there were some silver linings along the way. They had new players step up into new roles and that experience will certainly help them as we turn the page to the 2024 season. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1337313' first='Billy' last='Ramsey'] would put up some respectable numbers during his junior season and the first as QB1 of the Demons. He would end up throwing for nearly 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns and what's impressive is that he wasn't asked to throw it that much. This season, we think that production will go up in a major way and as long as he's as accurate as we saw last season, he should put up big numbers.

Part of the problem for Beggs in 2023 was the injury bug bit them hard and they had to deal with players coming in and out of the lineup. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1301052' first='Carson' last='Cooper'] is a junior to watch this season after he only played five games for the Demons last season. Despite only playing in five games, Cooper would total 60 tackles and was an absolute machine on the defensive side of the ball. And we know that the Beggs coaches are excited about his potential heading into the new season. If they get him back on the defensive side of the ball and he's healthy all season, he could end up being one of the top linebackers in Class 2A-2 this season. Only time will tell.

Another Beggs standout that is new to our radar is senior [player_tooltip player_id='1337314' first='Elijah' last='Johnson'] and he also comes from the defensive side of the ball. Last season, we didn't know much about Johnson going into the season but he would end up becoming one of Beggs' more productive players in terms of tackles. And for him to put up those kinds of numbers from the secondary is an impressive note as well. Johnson would finish his junior season with over 100 tackles and became one of the team's leading tacklers. Now, he's going into his senior year and looking for more in 2024. He's part of a defense that could end up being one of the better units in Class 2A-2 this season.

Our final player to watch is without a doubt the top playmaker on this Beggs team and he's been arguably that guy for several years now. Grayson first had his breakout moment during his freshman season. It was clear that he was going to provide a major impact on both sides of the ball and it didn't really matter where they lined him up. Now, he's going into his fourth season as that impact player and on offense, we expect to see him making plays at wide receiver after he led the team in receiving a year ago. On defense, he's one of the top defensive backs in the state and he had six interceptions a year ago. Simply put, he's going to be one of the best players in 2A-2 this season.

Aug. 30th - Verdigris
- Beggs and Verdigris have played in non-district play in each of the last two seasons and now they'll open the 2024 season against one another. Both programs are in similar boats as they want to get back to contending and being a threat in their respective class. And let's face it, the season opener is always a date you need to circle on the calendar. Beggs won last year's meeting but Verdigris knocked off the Demons in 2022. The grudge match happens early this year.
Sept. 13th - Henryetta
Sept. 20th - Okmulgee
Sept. 27th - AT Community Christian
Oct. 4th - Davis
- It's the halfway mark of the regular season and arguably the toughest game on the schedule for Beggs this season. Traditional powerhouse Davis comes to town and this game could end up deciding the district championship. Beggs will look to lean on their defense, specifically the guys in the front seven as they try to stop Davis and their option offense. Both Beggs and Davis are hoping to become the top dog in the new Class 2A-2 and there will be a lot on the line here.
Oct. 11th - AT Holdenville
Oct. 17th - Comanche
Oct. 25th - AT Coalgate
Nov. 1st - Tishomingo
Nov. 8th - AT Dibble
- In the final week of the regular season, Beggs will make another 100+ mile trip to face Dibble. This was a surprise team a year ago but they will have to replace a very productive running back and they got bumped up from Class A-1 back in April. Despite those two things, they could still make plenty of noise and by this point in the season, Beggs is going to be hungry to lock up their spot in the playoffs and they will need to avoid having any let downs before the playoffs begin.

NOTABLE

When Oklahoma had an emergency redistricting session in April, it was a good news/bad news situation for Beggs. On the plus side, they went from being in Class 2A-1 to Class 2A-2 and away from some of the 2A powerhouses of the last several seasons like Washington, Millwood and Jones. But on the negative side, Beggs landed in a district that just feels kind of thrown together with the leftovers from the class. There are several programs that are south of Norman along I-35 and then there's Beggs. And this season, the Demons will have to hit the road in four of the seven district contests. The week six game against Holdenville is the only district road game that isn't over 100 miles away. The road games with Community Christian, Coalgate and Dibble are all over 100 miles and the Demons will be putting some miles on the buses this fall.
