Continue ReadingAs we get deeper into the 2024 off-season, another season of high school football is quickly approaching. With that being said, it is time for another round of rankings updates. The third update of our rankings for the class of 2025 in the state of Kentucky has been officially posted! Over the next week or so, I will be doing positional breakdowns at each position. After already covering the offensive side of the ball, I have now turned my attention to the defensive side of the ball. With the defensive line and linebackers out of the way, here are our top defensive backs in the class of 2025 in the state of Kentucky.
Buddy Collins Buddy Collins 5’10” | 165 lbs | DB Scott County | 2025 State KY has continued to establish himself as the top defensive back in the state in his class. Collins lines up on the outside at corner where he is very impressive in man coverage. He does a great job of opening up and running with receivers to mirror their routes. When the ball is thrown his way, he breaks on the ball with perfect timing to break up the pass. He also scored four rushing touchdowns and returned three punts for touchdowns this past season. Collins currently holds offers from UT Martin, Navy, Lehigh, Kent State, Army, Marshall, Miami (OH), Louisville, and Arkansas State, and I could see more coming his way as he is a true Division I caliber prospect.
Isaac Brown Isaac Brown 6’3″ | 170 lbs | DB Cooper | 2025 State KY is a player that jumped onto our radar with a very impressive junior year. Brown is a lockdown corner on the outside, showing the ability to stay in the opposing receiver’s hip pocket in man coverage. When the ball is thrown his way, he is able to react with perfect timing and attack the ball at its highest point to make a play. Brown finished this past season with four interceptions in 15 games. He has also shown the ability to provide support against the run, finishing his junior year with 24 tackles. Brown also caught one touchdown pass this past season. Isaac currently holds offers from Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri State, and I expect some more to come his way as he has the talent to play at the Division I level.
Caleb Ricks Caleb Ricks 5’11” | 175 lbs | DB Trinity | 2025 State KY is a player that has been high on our radar for a while now and continued to stand out this past season. He lines up at corner where he is very reliable in pass coverage. Ricks does a great job of reading route combinations and the quarterback then breaking on the ball with perfect timing to break up the pass. He has also shown the ability to come downhill and make tackles against the run. Ricks is committed to play baseball at Louisville but he has the talent to play football at the Division I level if he were to ever have a change of heart.
Avaion Johnson Avaion Johnson 5’10” | 170 lbs | DB Louisville Central | 2025 State KY is another defensive back that has been high on our radar for a while now and continued to stand out this past season. Johnson lines up at safety where he is very reliable in pass coverage. He does a great job of reading the quarterback and breaking on the ball with perfect timing to make a play. Avaion finished this past season with four interceptions in 13 games. He has also shown the ability to fill the lane to provide run support, finishing his junior year with 84 tackles. Johnson currently holds an offer from Eastern Kentucky and I expect more to come his way as he is a Division I caliber safety prospect.
To wrap up our top five defensive backs in the class of 2025 in the state of Kentucky, I have Jaiden Shegog Jaiden Shegog 5’9″ | 160 lbs | DB Bryan Station | 2025 State KY . Shegog lines up at corner where he is very reliable in both man and zone coverage. He has impressive ball skills, showing the ability to react to the pass with perfect timing when it is thrown his way to make a play. Jaiden finished his junior year with one interception and several pass breakups in 14 games. He also showed the ability to make plays against the run, finishing the season with 26 tackles. Shegog currently holds an offer from Miami (OH) and I expect more to come his way as he has the talent to play at the Division I level.
