Bringing together some of the best talent Central Illinois has to offer, there’s no doubt that some of these names will continue to be heard in any football space you walk into this upcoming season. I’ll be discussing some of the standout players from the weekend who showed up and showed out for the spectators in attendance.
This Midwest Bucks QB is everything a coach could dream of in a quarterback. He possesses the perfect combination of size, professionalism, and athleticism. Matthew stands tall and takes command on the field. His passes travel in straight lines with pinpoint accuracy. He throws effortlessly, and I watched closely to see if he would flinch, but he didn’t. Combined with his attention to detail and great throwing mechanics, he is an offensive coordinator’s dream. Matthew is built like a pro. When he walked into the facility, all eyes turned to him. This kid is something special. I’m excited to follow him on this journey and watch him terrorize opponents for the next three years!

Spencer Russell
Spencer Russell
Coming off a season where Spencer earned All-Conference honors as a defensive back, this weekend he showcased his pass-catching ability. Spencer made several impressive grabs throughout the day, eliciting gasps from the spectators in the facility. Displaying his versatility, he proved to be a dynamic offensive playmaker, excelling in one-on-one matchups both as a wide receiver and defensive back. I witnessed firsthand his athleticism; I observed Spencer’s ability to close the gap on a receiver who gained a step on him. This play stood out as one of the memorable moments of the day.
Kenyon Gillespie
Kenyon Gillespie
Kenyon showed great poise in his role as a defensive back. He remained unfazed by the moves other receivers attempted at the line of scrimmage. Throughout the day, he was consistent with his position in front of WRs, displaying his hunger for the ball as if he were the one playing WR. Kenyon stands at 5’11”, and his long arms make his on-field presence seem twice his size, allowing him to disrupt passing plays. Playing with confidence all day, he showcased his prowess in covering the deep ball. Kenyon will continue to work and be a force to be reckoned with in the defensive backfield. Best thing about it is he’s no slouch on offense either!
Dereon Mays
Dereon Mays
Dereon is the team’s physical DB with great recovery speed and is adept at playing the ball effectively through the receiver’s hands. Each rep this week, he showed me something different. Whether it’s his ability to close on the ball or dominate the press at the line of scrimmage, it was impressive. Dereon’s footwork allows him to easily transition from a backpedal to breaking on the route, causing problems for opposing QBs. His strength, speed, and determination to be great led to minimal catches during yesterday’s one-on-one sessions.
