Prep Redzone Iowa rolled out its Class of 2027 rankings and watchlist earlier this week. In our initial rankings release, we identified 15 prospects with the skillset to be high-level recruits by the time it’s all said and done. Along with those 15 prospects, we also identified 85 watchlist players, whom we are making sure to keep a close eye on this offseason and into their sophomore season.
PRZ Rob (@RobHoweHN on Twitter) welcomes the Class of 2027 and breaks down the “Why?” behind the rankings HERE. So you can see a bit of what goes on behind the scenes when making the rankings.

An absolute beast of a DL! Sioux City East’s Darrian Anderson Darrian Anderson 6’3″ | 285 lbs | DL Sioux City East | 2027 IA stood out from our Stock Up showcase in December. Darrian does an excellent job eating up space on the interior defensive line. He can drop his anchor, extend his reach to stonewall offensive linemen, and essentially defend two gaps. Darrian showed he can use violent hands to rip away at attempts to block him. Anderson is also pretty mobile for his size, showing that he can pursue the ball very well and has the motor to trace down ball carriers. Darrian already has a great skillset and should only continue to get better with every offseason.
Highlights
It’s always worth noting when a freshman can work themselves into a varsity role at a powerhouse like Southeast Polk. That’s exactly what Cooper Chebuhar Cooper Chebuhar 6’2″ | 215 lbs | LB Southeast Polk | 2027 IA was able to do towards the end of the regular season. Chebuhar already has next-level size, standing at 6’3″ and 225 pounds, with the strength and explosiveness to blow up blocks. He played defensive end last season but also fits the role of OLB/EDGE rusher very well, using his quick first step to get an early jump on linemen. Watching his film, it seemed like Chebuhar would penetrate the line of scrimmage and was an imposing presence in opposing backfields. I also really liked Cooper’s tireless pursuit of the ball. Look out for Cooper to make a run at a starting spot on varsity next fall!
Iowa City has a pair of towering freshman offensive linemen who look like future stars, one being Preston Mensah Preston Mensah 6’3″ | 260 lbs | OL Iowa City High | 2027 IA . Preston is a player who clearly passes the measurables test with great size at 6’3″ and 260 pounds. I wish we had more access to his game film so we can get a better look on how the big man moves on the field. Regardless, with the state’s reputation for developing high-level offensive linemen, I wouldn’t be surprised if Preston ends up highly-coveted.
Freshman Damarion Orr Damarion Orr 5’8″ | 165 lbs | RB Linn-Mar | 2027 IA adds another quick, athletic back to what should be a very talented Linn-Mar backfield in 2024. What stood out the most to me from Damarion’s tape was his burst when hitting his lanes and acceleration once he’s cleared the second level. Orr showed the speed to be a home run threat whenever he touches the ball. Great vision and anticipation for running lanes allow him to maneuver through defenses with ease. He’s not the biggest back out there, but he does run with a certain level of toughness and grit that keeps him fighting through tackle attempts. Solid mix of speed, power, and vision should make him a dangerous back to watch in the upcoming seasons.
