At the OL position, size is a huge part what it takes to be successful. While it isn’t the only important factor, it can be the baseline on what the ceiling can be for an offensive lineman. Let’s check out some the absolute units that have crossed the 300 pound threshold, and show all the signs of great potential for the next level!
Tipping the scales at 330, LaMar is a load to deal with up front. With the way he has worked and improved, I have him pegged as one of the best big men in the class. His passing sets have seen vast improvement. His movement is natural, and he has a good punch. In the run game is where he truly shines to me, as he does a phenomenal job of getting his pads as low as he can, driving into the chest of the defender, and absolutely burying them. He’s an aggressive lineman with a mean streak who loves contact, and can make life difficult on his defender. He has all the physical tools to be great, now it’s about continuing to evolve and put in the work to round out the rest of his skills!
Highlights
Pitts absolutely has the wow factor at over 360 lbs, and standing tall around 6’7. Jaylen just absolutely overwhelms his opponents physically, as there is no shedding him. Once he locks on, you are at his mercy until the whistle. From the RT position, he seems extremely comfortable getting out the 2nd level, and bulldozing a path for the ball carrier. In passing situations he is a patient blocker who keeps a wide and strong base, and when the defender makes a mistake, he washes them down, sometimes taking other defenders out in his path. Overall, I really like the way he has blended skill and size, and I have a feeling he is going to lay waste to a lot of defenders this fall. He will be must see in 2024!
Ryder has moved up the scales recently and has now hit the 310 mark! I really like how technical his game is, specifically in pass sets. He does a nice job of staying low and in an athletic position rather than standing straight up, and he is able to shuffle his feet without crossing them or clicking his heels. Just a nice smooth shuffle that lets him change direction on a dime. In running situations he shines largely at being able to pull and get to the 2nd level, or kicking out his defender and making sure they are nowhere near the play. Last off season I did see him putting in the work at some college camps, and I am looking for more of the same this year.
As many know, Cooper is one of my favorite prospects in this class. Cooper is a big bodied offensive lineman who is run block first. He’s an aggressive and hard hitting guy who blocks to the whistle and buries guys. He stays low, doesn’t cross his feet, and gets the defenders chest. He’s another very talented guy at getting to the 2nd level and clearing linebackers out in his path. I wouldn’t be shocked if he starts to see a flurry of D1 offers this summer if he can make some noise at camps.
