Frei checks into our number one spot in our initial 2027 rankings release, and deservingly so after a stellar Freshmen campaign for Owyhee. He operated mostly from the slot position, and showed that he can be a dynamic weapon with the ball in his hands, and can run a variety of different routes downfield, while showing strong hands in traffic and terrific body control when he makes 50/50 ball plays. He is very versatile on the offensive side and can also lineup in the backfield and has a sudden burst, quick COD abilities in traffic and can break arm/ankle tackles with good balance and natural forward lean. For only a Freshman, he was very impressive at the Varsity level and showed to be a real weapon with college caliber talent. Frei will be one of the more dynamic and explosive kids heading into the 2024 season, and is a name to know regardless of class.
Thueson is the top defensive player in his class so far across Idaho, and could easily slide into our number one spot in our overall initial rankings release too. He is already a very good sized kid with a strong build, power lower body and is very explosive in the short area against the run and when coming downhill. Operating from the inside linebacker position, he scrapes over the top with a low hat, shows he is a true plug in the middle and can take on blockers and explodes through contact with violence while able to add a pass rush up the middle as well. He plays well above his age, and should only continue to grow and develop as he progresses through high school and will only improve upon his fluidity and movement abilities in space. Look for Thueson to make a case for that number one spot in our rankings in the next couple updates.
Highlights
Portmann checks into our rankings as the number one signal caller in this ’27 class, and has plenty of Varsity experience already heading into year two of his prep career. He is a mobile quarterback in the pocket with plus awareness, can avoid pressure well while keeping his eyes downfield and shows he can fit the ball into tight windows over the top with good velocity and spin on the ball. He also shows he is dangerous with his legs and knows when to tuck it and run, while showing some long speed downfield and some short area wiggle to avoid tacklers outside the pocket. His combination of overall athleticism, quick processing abilities and ability to throw a accurate deep ball make him very intriguing and he should be putting up big time numbers this Fall and building off his Frosh campaign.
