Portmann enters into our rankings upside as a top 45 prospect across Idaho and as the number 3 passer in the state. He has a live arm, can extend plays with his legs outside the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield while accurate with the deep ball and puts the ball in places only his guys can get it. He is not afraid to take hole shots over the middle or throw outside the hashes and shows he does not lose zip on the ball while on the run. Portmann can do tons of damage with his legs as well as he shows a good initial burst outside the pocket and downfield speed with some wiggle in space to make tacklers miss and force poor angles. Look for him to be near the top of multiple statistical categories through his senior year for Thunder Ridge and have plenty of college interest come his way.
Portmann has been off to a hot start to begin his Junior year and put up some ridiculous numbers on Friday night against Centennial in a big 48-14 win. The dual threat passer tossed for 305 yards with a 85% completion percentage and 5 scores and did a really nice job spreading the ball around and taking some shots vertically. He has looked good both in and out of the pocket, has shown he can buy time with his legs and keep his eyes downfield in traffic while improving and tightening up his throwing mechanics from his sophomore year.
Portmann checks into our rankings just inside the top ten overall, and as the number two signal caller across Idaho. He is a very athletic passer that can make plays with his legs to buy time and deliver the ball downfield and shows good pocket awareness and escapability under pressure. While throwing, he has a strong arm with good spin on the ball, accurate ball placement across the middle and on the outside and consistently throws his receivers open downfield while leading them away from defenders. Portmann is also tough to bring down both in the pocket and in the open field, as he shows contact balance and good pocket movement under duress while doing a nice job at keeping his eyes downfield at all times.
Portmann checks into our rankings as the number one signal caller in this ’27 class, and has plenty of Varsity experience already heading into year two of his prep career. He is a mobile quarterback in the pocket with plus awareness, can avoid pressure well while keeping his eyes downfield and shows he can fit the ball into tight windows over the top with good velocity and spin on the ball. He also shows he is dangerous with his legs and knows when to tuck it and run, while showing some long speed downfield and some short area wiggle to avoid tacklers outside the pocket. His combination of overall athleticism, quick processing abilities and ability to throw a accurate deep ball make him very intriguing and he should be putting up big time numbers this Fall and building off his Frosh campaign.
