Expert Analysis
Paul Gregorian | Prep Redzone Scout
Frei checks into our rankings update as a top three defensive back and can play anywhere on the back end and is explosive with the ball in his hands out of the slot or the backfield. He is a natural pass catcher with a strong initial burst, contact balance in traffic and can make defenders miss in space with some short area wiggle and open field speed in the clear. He also shows good vision and cutback abilities and is a natural playmaker after the catch and brings good versatility on defense as well with natural ball skills, fluid hips in transition and breaks quickly to pass catchers downhill. He will be one of the top returning two-way guys heading into 2026 across Idaho and is a key name to note through the season.

Frei checks into our rankings as the top two-way athlete in Idaho, and the number two overall prospect in the 2027 class. He is a elusive and explosive play-maker on offense, while showing elite ball skills, hip fluidity and cover abilities downfield from his corner position. Frei can play either in the slot or backfield, shows a strong initial burst through the first level with cutback abilities and good vision in tight windows, and is very difficult to take down in one on one situations due to his short are quickness and lateral movement in tight spaces. Defensively, he is a high IQ kid that triggers quickly, has natural ball skills at the point of attack and shows return abilities as well. Overall, he has tremendous natural football instincts, open field speed and offers position versatility on both sides of the ball.

Frei was one of the top sophomores in the state last season on his way to a league MVP award among others. He is a balanced player that is able to cover anyone at defensive back and then can really hurt teams on offense. He has a smooth backpedal that allow him to mirror and shade wide receivers. He is a great open field tackler and should be one of the top corners in the state as a junior regardless of class.

Frei checks into our rankings holding onto that top spot coming off a stellar frosh campaign and is a twitchy and elusive route runner that can also play in the backfield and on the defensive side of the ball. Frei is dangerous with the ball in his hands, shows a nice initial burst, open field speed and can find the windows in tight spaces with cutback abilities as well. He is a no brainer next level college kid, that should start drawing interest through the off-season, and should turn heads on the camp circuit this off-season.

Frei checks into our number one spot in our initial 2027 rankings release, and deservingly so after a stellar Freshmen campaign for Owyhee. He operated mostly from the slot position, and showed that he can be a dynamic weapon with the ball in his hands, and can run a variety of different routes downfield, while showing strong hands in traffic and terrific body control when he makes 50/50 ball plays. He is very versatile on the offensive side and can also lineup in the backfield and has a sudden burst, quick COD abilities in traffic and can break arm/ankle tackles with good balance and natural forward lean. For only a Freshman, he was very impressive at the Varsity level and showed to be a real weapon with college caliber talent. Frei will be one of the more dynamic and explosive kids heading into the 2024 season, and is a name to know regardless of class.

Frei was a nice surprise as one of the few freshman impact players in the state. He was able to really make an impact at receiver where he made plays with his route running ability and natural pass catching hands. He was able to really stretch the field and be impactfully on 50/50 balls in the air. He is going to be on the watchlist for sure and a name that will be talked about moving into his sophomore year.
