Following my breakdown of the top standouts on the offensive line, here’s my list of the top performers on the defensive line that established themselves during positional drills.
In the first place spot on my list is Jaquise Smith Jaquise Smith 6’3″ | 305 lbs | DL South Warren | 2027 State KY , a defensive lineman at South Warren High School. What impressed me most about Smith was his outstanding size for a rising sophomore as well as his ability to be explosive at the line of scrimmage. I also liked how Smith could utilize his core strength and arms to stun and overpower the offensive line during positional drills.
Highlights
I am additionally impressed with Malik Butler, a defensive lineman at Franklin-Simpson High School. What stood out most about Butler was his deceptive footwork, strength off the snap and his ability to operate efficiently in the pocket. I also liked how Butler could adapt to his foe’s physicality off the snap as well as how he utilized his arm strength to blast his opponent during linemen drills.
Highlights
Claiming the number three spot on my list is JW Muster JW Muster 6’3″ | 235 lbs | DL Owensboro Catholic | 2026 KY , a defensive lineman at Owensboro Catholic High School. In addition to excellent footwork, Muster caught my attention with his great size and wingspan, proving his ability to lock in at the line and slip past his opponent in the pocket. I also liked Muster’s ability to absorb contact and remain durable under pressure.
Avery Hughes
Avery Hughes
Another skilled prospect to watch for is Avery Hughes, a defensive lineman at Portland (TN) High School. What impressed me the most about Hughes was his ability to be aggressive off the snap, using his strength and physical edge to overwhelm his opponent at the line of scrimmage. I also liked how Hughes could quickly attack openings in the pocket and remain durable against the offensive line.
David Owens
David Owens
Coming in at number five on my list is David Owens, a defensive lineman at Russellville High School. Owens caught my attention with his strong footwork, outstanding size and his ability to be versatile. Owens additionally contributes quick execution and the ability to barrel past his opponent in the pocket. I also liked how Owens can contain pushback from the offensive line and match his foe’s physicality.
