5A All-State Teams

4A All-State Teams

After years of coming close, Williamsburg won its first state championship this fall. The Raiders did so moving up a class after 2022, when they finished state runners-up in 2A.

A competitive 3A season saw fourth-seeded Sioux City Bishop Heelan upset No. 1 Creston in one state semifinal. Williamsburg avenged a regular-season setback to Solon by rolling the Spartans, 45-14, in the other semi. The Raiders shut out Heelan, 20-0, in the championship game.

This enrollment class proved to be deep with a lot of individual talent from the Mississippi to Missouri Rivers. It made pairing down to all-state teams challenging, but here's what we came up with:

FIRST-TEAM

OFFENSE

Quarterback

[player_tooltip player_id='320765' first='Cael' last='Turner'], '25, Creston

Turner led Creston to the Dome as the No. 1 seed with an outstanding junior campaign. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes, leading 3A in passing yards (2,993) and touchdowns (34) with only eight interceptions.

Running Back

[player_tooltip player_id='156632' first='Jaxon' last='Cherry'], '24, Webster City

Cherry fits on the first-team all-state defense as well. We put him here after he led 3A in rushing yards (1,891) and touchdowns (26). He averaged 7.5 yards per carry.

[player_tooltip player_id='247948' first='Angelo' last='Jackson'], '24, Davenport Assumption

The Knights relied heavily on Jackson, who racked up 1,345 yards (7.8 YPC) and 25 scores on the ground. He also caught two TDs.

Offensive Line

[player_tooltip player_id='1360745' first='Grant' last='Wilson'], '25, Solon

Wilson helped pave the way for a potent Spartan rushing attack as a dominant center.

Braden Plotz, '24, Williamsburg

Plotz anchored a tough, physical front for the state champions.

[player_tooltip player_id='320769' first='Quinten' last='Fuller'], '24, Creston

Creston fielded a high-scoring offense with Fuller standing out on a talented front five.

Jeryn Funke, '25, West Delaware

Funke shines with his physicality and high motor. That shows up on the other side of the ball as well.

Jake Trenary, '24, Clear Lake

At 6-3, 225, Trenary is one of the better athletes you'll find playing offensive line. He's also stands out on defense.

Receiver/Tight End

Braylon Wetjen, '24, Williamsburg

Wetjen was overshadowed at times on a talented team but was a big reason the Raiders won it all. He caught 38 passes for 804 yards (21.1 YPR) and 15 touchdowns. He also was one of the team's top defenders, collecting six interceptions.

Evan Brase, '24, Mount Vernon

The Mustang senior led 3A with 1,042 receiving yards in '23. Twelve of his 60 catches were touchdowns. He averaged 17.4 yards per reception.

Brandon Briley, '24, Creston

Briley shined in his final high school season. He hauled in 52 passes for 897 yards (17.3 YPR) and 13 touchdowns.

DEFENSE

Line

[player_tooltip player_id='847937' first='Thomas' last='Meyer'], '25, Clear Lake

One of the top juniors in the state, Meyer is worthy of all-state on offense, too. Defensively, he piled up 14.0 tackles for loss with 3.0 sacks and 28 solo tackles.

[player_tooltip player_id='252334' first='Jack' last='Limbaugh'], '25, Algona

Also one of the state's top 11th-graders, Limbaugh's stats are somewhat suppressed by the attention he receives from opposing offenses. Still, he managed 3.0 sacks, 4.0 tackles for loss and freed up others to make plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='1360498' first='Micah' last='Lang'], '25, Williamsburg

Lang accumulated a 3A-best 14.5 sacks to go with 18.5 tackles for loss and 26 solo tackles for the champion Raiders.

[player_tooltip player_id='1278806' first='Ethan' last='Wood'], '25, Mount Vernon

Wood's 10.5 sacks were second to Lang in the class. He contributed 17.0 tackles for loss and 23 solo tackles as well.

Linebacker

[player_tooltip player_id='848057' first='Rayce' last='Heitman'], '25, Williamsburg

Heitman is a baller in all three phases of football. He paced 3A with 107 solo tackles and ranked second with 118.5 total stops. He rolled up 21.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

[player_tooltip player_id='248019' first='Brett' last='White'], 24, Solon

The Baylor baseball commitment showed could play college football if he chose that path. As a senior, he collected 106.0 tackles (67 solo, 25.0 TFL) with 5.0 sacks.

Defensive Back

[player_tooltip player_id='248037' first='Derek' last='Weisskopf'], 24, Williamsburg

The Iowa Hawkeye commitment moved to QB during the championship season while also shining on defense, where he'll play in college. He picked off four passes and tallied 50 solo tackles.

Quinn Olson, '24, Sioux City Bishop Heelan

Olson also played QB and was one of the class's top two-way performers. On defense, he intercepted four passes with one being a Pick-6. He recorded 33.5 tackles (26).

Kyle Kingsbury, '24, Nevada

Also a very productive receiver, Kingsbury intercepted five passes this fall with 31.5 tackles.

[player_tooltip player_id='155566' first='Dylan' last='Calvin'], '24, Creston

Calvin tied Wetjen for the 3A lead with six picks. He registered 35.5 (23 solo, 1.0 TFL).

Kicker

Scott Dickson, '24, Sergeant-Bluff Luton

The S-BL senior connected on 8 of 9 field goal attempts with a long of 48 yards. Sixteen of his 36 kickoffs were touchbacks.

Punter

Lucas Swainey, '24, Keokuk

Swainey punted 24 times with an average 39.3 yards per kick.

SECOND-TEAM

OFFENSE

Quarterback

[player_tooltip player_id='252221' first='Alex' last='Manske'], '25, Algona

Running Back

[player_tooltip player_id='320767' first='Brennan' last='Hayes'], '24, Creston

[player_tooltip player_id='247944' first='Cason' last='Stevenson'], '24, Nevada

Offensive Line

Andrew Heck, '24, Mount Vernon

[player_tooltip player_id='1286441' first='Carter' last='Brant'], '25, Dubuque Wahlert

Brandon Lahr, '24, Webster City

[player_tooltip player_id='252337' first='Hayden' last='Soma'], '25, Harlan

Mason Scott, '24, Solon

Receiver/Tight End

[player_tooltip player_id='252312' first='Brady' last='Kurt'], '25, Independence

[player_tooltip player_id='247970' first='Carson' last='Bruhn'], '24, Sioux Center

Blake Moser, '24, Boyden Hull/Rock Valley

DEFENSE

Line

[player_tooltip player_id='1361005' first='Tyler' last='Williams'], '25, Mount Vernon

[player_tooltip player_id='665099' first='Ben' last='Kampman'], '24, Solon

[player_tooltip player_id='247974' first='Brennen' last='Blegen'], '24, Benton

Rhett Schaefer, '24, Davenport Assumption

Linebacker

[player_tooltip player_id='1238514' first='Kasen' last='Thomas'], '26, Sioux City Bishop Heelan

[player_tooltip player_id='1406617' first='Tate' last='Wood'], '25, Independence

Jackson Burlage, '25, Nevada

Defensive Back

Jace Biery, '24, Benton

Conrad Smith, '24, West Delaware

Max Burgmeier, '25, Central DeWitt

Josiah Cunnings, '24, Central City

Kicker

Billy Moore, '24, Davenport Assumption

Punter

Jonah Dupont, '24, Center Point-Urbana
