They did it and did it in spectacular fashion, holding the Rockford offense to 1 garbage time touchdown, and allowing a kickoff return. Other than that, it was a seamless night for the Cardinals as they came away with a regional title and a spot in the semi finals. This article will highlight the integral pieces that put their team in the semi finals.
One of the best offensive line performances of the season was anchored by sophomore Ben Nichols Ben Nichols 6’6″ | 325 lbs | OL Davison | 2026 State MI . He was a pancake machine in the run game, putting multiple defensive linemen on their backs. I was impressed with his pass sets as well, as he kept a low and wide stance and kept his man in front of him. He wasn’t lunging and getting off balance like some younger linemen do. It was a full display of his impressive skillset, and is only continuing to develop. This will be a P5 player in a few years no doubt about it.
Braylen really started the game off hot with a deep ball, and you could tell it rattled the Rockford defense. The rest of the night he was a constant deep threat, and Rockford had to respect that the rest of the game. Naves runs great routes, changes directions quickly and was able to catch in traffic with some tremendous focus. He’s definitely a future D1 WR, and he is starting to get that traction especially in the MAC. I expect him to be a huge piece next week against the Belleville secondary.

Carter was the man leading the charge defensively. He was stuffing running lanes all night long, and when it mattered most, Carter stepped up. On 4th and goal, he knew what play was coming, and he crashed through the line and made a bone rattling hit to stuff Rockford and give the ball back to his offense. He’s received almost 20 collegiate offers, and is currently committed to Miami (OH). Carter is going to be an absolute force in the MAC, and I am excited to see what he can do next week against another offense with college level kids at every position.

Get this man some offers ASAP! 6’4, 215 defensive end with some fantastic pass rush moves. He was making things incredibly difficult for the Rockford offense as he was in the backfield pretty much every play. He also completely blew up a trick play which caused a fumble, and he wound up scooping it for a big return. He absolutely stood out as one of the best defensive players we watched all season long. He is going to be a huge piece to the puzzle next week if he can get pressure and disrupt the Belleville passing game.
The fact that AJ is only a Junior should terrify everyone in his path. He runs so hard, has extremely elusive moves, but can also run through some chests. Last night when they needed to put the game on ice, he did that. Everyone knew he was getting the ball, and he would turn a short 2 yard gain into a 5-7 yard gain after breaking tackles. He ended up popping a huge TD run to make it 28-7, essentially dashing any hopes of a Ram comeback. He played like every snap was his last and was making the most of every carry, and was also solid taking screen passes for first downs and extra yardage. He is the total package when it comes to the RB position. He’s another kid getting some MAC attention, and I wouldn’t be shocked if some P5 teams come knocking soon.

Sawyer looked absolutely unflappable on Saturday night. He was delivering darts under pressure on multiple occasions and kept his offense moving without flinching. He wouldn’t panic and scramble or force it, he would just take it on the chin and threw accurate balls anyways. I really like the way he commanded the offense and stayed calm. This was a huge test for him and his squad, and the confidence he had definitely trickled down to the rest of the team. If he takes this same mentality into next week, this team could be heading to Ford Field in 2 weeks.
Cortez did a really nice job all night long of staying with his man and staying in stride. The only times he got separated, he was able to close the distance with some elite speed. He was able to get physical and jam guys as well, and went up and contested everything. Cortez even had a pass deflection in the end zone on a bigger receiver where he was able to get great position, and he went up and batted it away. He was someone I wasn’t too familiar with, but I was shocked to see he is only a Sophomore. He has an extremely bright future ahead of him if he continues to develop!
