#8 Mustang comes into this week’s road game with #2 Union looking to turn things around after dropping their last two games in two different fashions. The Broncos came into this season looking to reload and we’ll admit, we might have underrated Mustang back in July and August because they got off to a great start on the season. But now, the Broncos are still looking to set themselves up for success in November with district wins down the stretch. Because the top six teams from each district make the playoffs, Mustang isn’t in danger of missing out on the postseason. But they are still battling for home field advantage and they have an outside shot at getting a first round bye.
They opened up the season 4-0 on the year with impressive wins on the road against 6A-2’s #2 Deer Creek, followed by a last second win over Springdale Har-Ber. That Har-Ber win was the first time Mustang ever played a game out of state and it certainly was a memorable one. Mustang beat the Antlers 26-23 and would follow that up with a 49-47 win over Har-Ber. They also scored wins over Southmoore and rival Yukon to get off to a 4-0 start. But week five brought a 54-3 road loss to an Owasso team that is getting stronger and stronger. They followed that up with a tough loss at home to Edmond Santa Fe. Mustang rallied multiple times but a late turnover would stop another rally and they lost 56-49.
Coming into this season, Mustang only returned three full time starters on the offensive side of the ball. They had to replace the majority of their production from the skill positions and while they had several young players that had a lot of potential, it was unproven potential for the most part. On defense, the strength was in their secondary and linebacker group as the majority of their starters were back. And we’ve mentioned this a few times already this season, but Mustang has two pretty special classes with the 2026 and 2027 groups. So the future is incredibly bright. But the Broncos are proving that they can get the job done this season and those young standouts are growing up quickly.
This week, they’ll face a Union team that is 5-1 and control their own destiny in the district. They tripped up on the road against Jenks back in week two and have been dominant ever since. They beat Owasso 55-22 at home and have put up 60+ points in each of the last two games. But the Broncos might face a Union team that isn’t 100 percent as the speculation is that the Redhawks will be without their star quarterback. Below, we take a look at five players to watch for Mustang. Not only have these guys had good starts to the season but they should also have an impact on Friday’s game.
MUSTANG’S PLAYERS TO WATCH
We mentioned earlier in this breakdown how Mustang’s strength was going to be on the defensive side of the ball. Leading the front seven is senior Bear Meadows Bear Meadows 6’0″ | 215 lbs | LB Mustang | 2024 State OK at the linebacker position. Last season, the Broncos were led by Hudson Conrad at the linebacker position and Meadows has taken that spot as a prototypical middle linebacker that absolutely flies all over the field and when he shows up to the ball carrier, he usually has bad intentions. Coming into last week’s game with Edmond Santa Fe, Meadows had racked up 80 tackles and has been one of the top linebackers in Class 6A-1 this season. And after watching some of his film from the first half of the season, it’s hard not to be impressed with the way he hits in the open field.
Mustang has a pair of running backs to keep an eye on moving forward. But senior Bryance Sanders Bryance Sanders 5’11” | RB Mustang | 2024 State OK seems to have a firm grip of the majority of carries within the offense. We mentioned back in the summer how we saw Sanders in the spring and he was making big play after big play. Sanders felt like somewhat of an unknown coming into this season when it comes to all the top running backs in Class 6A-1. But because of that, he also felt like a perfect candidate to be a breakout star at the running back position. Sanders has put up some strong numbers so far this season and has been steady on finding his way to the end zone. We’re looking forward to seeing Sanders in person this week. He’s going against a stout Union defense.
There’s no other way to describe it, Mustang sophomore wide receiver Jaden Johnson Jaden Johnson 6’1″ | WR Mustang | 2026 State OK is having a monster season and he is quickly becoming a 2026 prospect that people need to know about moving forward. Jaden is the younger brother of OU freshman Jacobe Johnson, who was an All American at Mustang. Jaden is also a twin brother to Jaytee Johnson Jaytee Johnson 6’0″ | DB Mustang | 2026 OK and the two of them have the potential to be the next impact players for Mustang at wide receiver. So the DNA is clearly there for Jaden to be a potential star in this Mustang offense. And so far this season, Jaden has lived up to the hype. But this week is going to be a big test for the young playmaker. He’ll be going up against a Union secondary that is the strength of the Redhawk defense.
The quarterback getting Johnson the ball will be junior signal caller Trajan Williamson Trajan Williamson 6’3″ | QB Mustang | 2025 State OK and he’s another Bronco that’s having a breakout season. The quarterback position was arguably the biggest question mark coming into this season. Williamson is replacing a three-year starter at the position but the dual-threat quarterback has already had some monster performances but Mustang will look for him to once again be at his best this week in a massive game against Union. Williamson is just as dangerous on the ground as he is in the air and he provides a dynamic on offense that is tough to defend. Last week, Williamson led the furious rally against Edmond Santa Fe that came up just short. Williamson will be a player to watch this week.
Highlights
Mustang senior Zachery Warren Zachery Warren 6’1″ | DB Mustang | 2024 State OK returned this season at the safety position and he is a defensive back prospect in the state’s 2024 class that has a very high upside. Last season, we started to buy into Warren as a next level talent at safety but he dealt with nagging injuries throughout the season. This season, Warren has made up for that lost time and has been an absolute impact player for Mustang on the defensive side of the ball. Similar to Meadows, we’ve had a chance to watch Warren on film so far this season and we’re very impressed with his tackling ability. Coming up this week, Mustang is playing a Union offense that is talented but will have a freshman at quarterback. Warren and the Broncos will look to force some mistakes early.
