This newly formed rivalry created perhaps one of the best atmospheres within the state and should continue to do so. The Wolves were down 17-6 at the half and came back in a thriller to beat the Warriors.
Here are some of the names that were impressive from Friday:
After watching Johnson play I’d say he’s an impressive dual – threat QB. He passed for 207 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, while also adding 61 yards on the ground. You need to overlook the turnovers though because the dynamic playmaking ability he brings to this offense is major. Johnson can easily outrun many defenders with his legs but is also accurate enough to stress defenses out with his arm. He is easily one of the best athletes in his class as it would be interesting to see how he fairs at other positions. The leadership and clutch ability he has is apparent as he lead the late offensive drive against the Warriors which allowed them to take the lead.
Highlights
Will Retz
Will Retz
Retz caught four receptions for 95 yards and one touchdown. He is a rather impressive receiver who can be relied on whenever the wolves needed a play. The long frame he brings is on display as he is a physical receiver at the catch point but can also get on your toes quick. He brings deep threat ability but can also have his possession moments. Retz is perhaps WR1 and will continue to be a key piece to this dynamic Wolves offense.
Leinen is one half of a damn good linebacker core on the Wolves defense. He had 6.5 tackles, two of which were for loss and had the game sealing interception. Leinen is an all around playmaker within this defense as he can stop the run, defend the pass and even rush/blitz off the edge. His ability to get sideline to sideline was exciting to see on friday as he showed good range when tackling ballcarries. He showed that his is a hybrid type backer who can do many different tasks that are asked of him. The senior captain will look to continue progressing with this defense.
Lamb is the other half of the Wolves’ linebacker core. He is a bigger linebacker who profiles more in the middle but still brings adequate athleticism. He was everywhere on the field showing he can drop back into coverage but create damage in the run game. He showed good awareness and vision that allowed him to tempo and shoot gaps but what stood out most was his physicality. Lamb is not waiting to make contact as he creates it and becomes even more of a disruptor. The range he possess is even exceptional as he showed he is not so easy to outrun for how stout he is. He finished the night with 9.5 (8 solo) tackles.
Ort is a difference maker in this defense. The senior safety showed playmaking ability in both the pass and run game. He managed to come downhill with physicality then go play center field and not allow anything behind him. Ort also posses good IQ and awareness as he consistently showed those traits within his consist style of play. He had four tackles, two pass breakups and one interception.
Grant Gammell
Grant Gammell
Gammell proved to be a very efficient back for the Warriors. He had 119 yards on the ground and a touchdown. He showed good bursts of speed, exceptional patience and ability to catch out the backfield. Gammell also showed he can get physical when carrying the ball and in his pass blocking ability. Not to mention he took some snaps at outside backer and racked up two tackles. Look for the junior to keep being an impact on both sides of the ball.
Mason Brooks Mason Brooks 6'3" | 185 lbs | DB Waukee | 2024 IA
Mason Brooks Mason Brooks 6'3" | 185 lbs | DB Waukee | 2024 IA
Brooks was a menace on the Warrior defense. Piling up 5.5 tackles (1 tfl), one interception and two pass break ups the senior safety showed why he should be feared by offenses. Brooks lined up in the box, back deep and in the slot for the warriors and happened to make plays at all three spots. He brings an aggression to his play style and showed that physicality when shedding blocks. The playmaking ability he brings at the safety spot is exceptional and is a huge reason the defense had the success it did. Look for Brooks to continue making plays for the Warriors.
Stobbe was just a pure force upfront, the North Dakota commit at times was having his way with the Wolves front. All night he was creating space and working second level kicking out defenders whenever he got the chance. The strength in the run game was apparent but it was also impressive seeing him work through pass pro. Stobbe was barely, if even, letting defenders beat him when he had to stand his one on one matchups. The future Fighting Hawk has shown why he is so valuable and will continue to be a key factor of that offensive line.

Beckett Bakker Beckett Bakker 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Waukee | 2026 State IA
Bakker, like his counterpart Johnson, is another dynamic dual – threat Quarterback. He went for 214 yards in the air with one touchdown and two interceptions but also added 33 yards rushing. While he didn’t repeat his week one performance he still showed how capable he is as a playmaker. He is able to extend plays with his elusiveness and has the ability to to put some throws in tight spots. As a ball carrier he understands how to follow his blocks and even has some nice moves that sets up his defenders. He works well in play action progressions and knows how to scan the field. Bakker is only a sophomore but possess a certain type of posture that allows his older peers to rally behind him.
Nathan Deimerly
Nathan Deimerly
The junior outside backer was perhaps an unsung hero with his performance. He lined up as a hybrid type edge rusher who showed ability to drop back into coverage if needed. However where he wins is by being disruptive upfront. There were many times he clogged up gaps which forced the ball carrier to have to chase another direction and sometimes he even finished the play himself. Deimerly displayed some pass rushing ability as well as there were a couple of times he generated some pressures and even eventually got home. He finished the game with 4.5 (.5 sack) tackles.
