Last weekend the OC Buckeyes out of California took on the Maryland Heat at The St. James indoor turf facility in Springfield, Virginia. The OC Buckeyes left victorious due to some outstanding play on the offensive side of the ball. The game got off to a slow start, with an opening re-kick and a sputtering first series that started with an offsides and back-to-back missed connections in the air. However, once this talented group settled down, they started to move the ball affectively. Here are five players that stood out to me.
Made good reads and got rid of the ball quickly once settled down after first series. #9 Russell has nice arm strength and ran the spread RPO system well, with solid mechanics that kept the defense on their heels. Threw two touchdown passes while hanging in the pocket knowing he would be hit. Ball placement on multiple throws shows he if mature and understand timing against pressure situations. Got the ball out in screens and ran smart when it was time to keep it. No turnovers for four quarters.
Aligned outside mostly at wide receiver during game, he’s very shifty and explosive. With seven minutes left in the first half, #18 Luca came up with an explosive touchdown reception on a stutter and go, running right by the corner to put his team up 14-0.
6’1 175 wide receiver rocking #4 is an athlete. Ace put up the first score in an acrobatic touchdown catch at the right corner of the end zone to get his team on the board in the first quarter of play. He showed off his ability to redirect at the top of the route making the defender slip for him to create space to keep his feet in. Then turned around and kicked his own PAT. Is the punter as well.
Jaion Smith Jaion Smith 5’11” | 185 lbs | ATH CA got the spark going in the backfield with a 35+ yard run in the first half right up the middle. Displayed patience while setting up blocks, then accelerating to daylight. Ran hard with limited carries in their spread heavy offense. Added another tough 11 yard scamper in the second half that could have easily resulted in more yardage. Maryland’s over the head snap resulted in the Buckeyes getting the ball inside the rezone, but couldn’t capitalize with Smith getting his 2 yard touchdown called back. Followed up with a failed field goal attempt.
Lokeni was the anchor for the offensive line as a Center. Delivered the ball to his quarterbacks seamlessly all game and helped keep their feet clean. Displayed quickness after the snap and combo the A gap to open lanes for runners to get North and South. Big body lineman with range. One of the bigger frames up front.
