#10 Collinsville is a perfect example of just how deep and talented Class 5A is this season. Defending champion Carl Albert is a heavy favorite to defend their crown but there is some great football being played all over the state. And despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the Cardinals have reloaded and they have a great mix of experienced seniors and talented sophomores that make the future incredibly bright for the Cardinals. But before we start thinking about that, the focus is on the 2023 season and up next is a district clash in Tulsa against Bishop Kelley.
Bishop Kelley is another example of just how talented this class is. We knew the Comets were going to be good coming into this season but they had a very tough non-district schedule. They lost back to back games right out of the gate but come into this week at 2-2 with back to back wins over rival Bishop McGuinness and Will Rogers to open district play. The Comets have a balanced offense and some really talented players that will give Collinsville problems. In last season’s meeting, the Cardinals were tied at 14 heading into the fourth quarter before Hudson Henslick Hudson Henslick 5'9" | 155 lbs | WR Collinsville | 2024 State OK scored a pair of touchdowns to give Collinsville the 28-21 win.
Speaking of Henslick, he has been on fire to start this season, but more on him in our “Players To Watch” section below. He leads a Collinsville offense that can beat you in a variety of ways. Offensively, they’re averaging close to 50 points per game and have done so with a strong rushing attack and a passing game that is getting better and better every week. Defensively, they’ve had moments where they’ve bent but they haven’t broken. They’re giving up 17 points per game but you can make the argument that Bishop Kelley will be the best team they’ve seen so far this season.
The winner in this match-up is going to be in a really good position moving forward in this district. Reigning district champ Grove is 3-1 but they aren’t as dynamic as their 2022 team was. Claremore is the other big threat in this district and the Zebras are unbeaten as well with some strong wins on the schedule already. Collinsville won’t see them until week ten. The district title could be on the line there but it won’t be if the Cardinals don’t take care of business on Friday night in Tulsa.
COLLINSVILLE’S PLAYERS TO WATCH
Collinsville’s running game has been mauling opponents and it’s hard to ignore the big guys up front that help get the job done. Senior offensive lineman and Tulsa commit Colten Christian Colten Christian 6’5″ | 285 lbs | OL Collinsville | 2024 State OK leads an offensive line unit that wears opponents down and allows their physical runners to get to the next level. Christian is one of the best senior offensive linemen in the state and he’s continuing to prove that this season. We’ve gotten the chance to see Christian in person a handful of times and every time we see him, it looks like he’s taken his game to another level. Tulsa is getting a gem with Christian in their 2024 class.
Highlights
We knew that Collinsville senior Hudson Henslick Hudson Henslick 5’9″ | 155 lbs | WR Collinsville | 2024 State OK was special from his outstanding junior season in 2022. He came into this season as one of the best wide receivers in Class 5A but it feels like he’s taken his game up a notch and has to be considered one of the best overall players in the class at this point. Every single game, Henslick is making a tremendous impact on the game. Whether it’s as Collinsville’s top target in the passing game, on defense or in the return game, Henslick is a true game-changer. He was a big part of the Cardinals beating Bishop Kelley last season and he’ll look to do it again this week.
Collinsville senior running back and defensive standout Jack Keith Jack Keith 6’0″ | DL Collinsville | 2024 OK has been on an absolute tear in the first month of the season. Keith has already been named the team’s offensive player of the game and then earned defensive player of the game in a different win this season. Keith is getting the job done on both sides of the football and he’s part of the dangerous two-headed monster at running back for the Cardinals. Like several Collinsville running backs in the past, Keith is a physical runner who is clearly a defensive player that can shine at running back. But Keith has company in the backfield.
Joining Keith in the backfield is sophomore Scott Rigby Scott Rigby 5’11” | ATH Collinsville | 2026 State OK and just like Keith, he has stood out on both sides of the ball this season. Rigby had a solid freshman season and he was already on our radar coming into this year. But he’s continuing to raise the bar and we like what he brings to the table on the offensive side of the ball. Rigby has nearly 350 yards and six touchdowns on the ground so far this season and he’s looking for much more. The two-headed monster of Keith and Rigby is going to wear down defenses throughout the season and they eventually get tired of having to tackle one of these two.
Because Collinsville’s running game is so strong and wears down opponents, that has opened things up in the passing game for sophomore Skyler Moorman Skyler Moorman 6’2″ | 185 lbs | QB Collinsville | 2026 State OK at quarterback. The Cardinals have had a really good string of quarterbacks over the last several seasons. First, Andrew Carney led them to the school’s first state championship. Then you had Kaden Rush last season who became a breakout star while replacing Carney. Now, Moorman has taken over and he’s done a good job so far this season. But we’re looking forward to seeing how Moorman looks as the competition gets ratcheted up in district play.
