Two weeks ago, Choctaw had their season opener against Del City end abruptly in the third quarter when there was a shooting in the parking lot that resulted in the death of one teenager. Their week one game with Edmond Santa Fe was cancelled and Thursday’s road game with Westmoore was actually scheduled for Friday at Choctaw but it was moved up a day and their “Homecoming” game all of a sudden but the Yellowjackets on the road. The Yellowjackets showed little rust, scoring on the second play of the game and 6A-2’s #2 Choctaw would knock off 6A-1’s #8 Westmoore 29-10.
Head coach Jake Corbin mentioned how he was worried about how clean the Yellowjackets would play considering they have only had a few quarters of football in the last month. Junior quarterback Cash Williams Cash Williams 6'1" | 205 lbs | ATH Choctaw | 2025 State OK erased any concerns of rust on the second play when he dropped back to pass but then scampered for a 75-yard touchdown run. After Westmoore lost 24 yards on their first possession because of a few bad snaps, the Yellowjackets would have another big play, this time from sophomore running back Mayor Morgan Mayor Morgan 5'6" | 170 lbs | RB Choctaw | 2026 State OK when he went 58-yards for a touchdown.
After that, both teams settled in and started exchanging blows and big plays but there was no scoring until the third quarter. The Yellowjackets led 12-0 at halftime but Westmoore would open the second half with a 46-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Micheal Graham Micheal Graham 6'0" | ATH Del City | 2024 State OK and they weren’t done in the third quarter. Jaxson Lee added a 35-yard field goal and all of a sudden, the Jags only trailed by two points. Choctaw immediately responded with a 70-yard touchdown run from Juju Smith on the second play of their next drive.
Williams added another long touchdown run in the fourth quarter as he got loose for a 42-yard scamper to extend the lead to 26-10. The Yellowjackets would add a field goal and the defense would do a great job of containing Westmoore and their star quarterback in Graham. Choctaw is now 1-0 on the season and they will sit out week three before district play opens up in week four.
CHOCTAW’S TOP PERFORMERS
While Westmoore’s dual-threat quarterback struggled on Thursday night, Choctaw’s dual-threat QB was on point from the start of the game. Choctaw junior Cash Williams Cash Williams 6’1″ | 205 lbs | ATH Choctaw | 2025 State OK was the best player on the field on Thursday. He would throw for just over 100 yards on 8-10 passing. But some of those stats could be fudged as Choctaw does a lot of screen passes that are very close to being either forward or backwards passes, including the toss to Juju Smith that went for a touchdown. But Williams was at his best on the ground. He would run for nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Williams had a hot start with a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. He split time with Landon Gatson Landon Gatson 6’3″ | 210 lbs | QB Choctaw | 2026 State OK at QB.
Coming into Thursday’s game, you can make the argument that Choctaw junior standout Juju Smith was the top standout on the offensive side of the ball for the Yellowjackets. He showed that a few times on Thursday. He was their leading receiver with five receptions and we expect him to be the leading receiver throughout the 2023 season. Smith also took a backwards pass from Williams 70 yards for a touchdown. Smith is outstanding with the football in his hands and that was evident when he ran away from the Westmoore defense on that touchdown. Smith also can have an impact on defense and then as a return specialist. Thursday was just another example of his dynamic ability.
It was hard to pick a player of Choctaw’s defense because as a unit, they were absolutely lights out on Thursday night. But we’re giving the nod to senior defensive lineman Marques McGrew Marques McGrew 6’0″ | 250 lbs | DL Choctaw | 2024 State OK because he led the push up front that caused a ton of problems for the Westmoore rushing attack. Westmoore dynamic quarterback Micheal Graham Micheal Graham 6’0″ | ATH Del City | 2024 State OK was coming off a game where he ran for more than 200 yards against Yukon. He had -21 yards rushing at halftime and finished with 66 yards on 17 carries. He got the bulk of his yards on two carries and McGrew and the Yellowjacket defense contained him the rest of the way. McGrew and Choctaw’s defense was outstanding on Thursday.
Highlights
Williams wasn’t the only dynamic player in the Choctaw rushing attack. Yellowjacket sophomore running back Mayor Morgan Mayor Morgan 5’6″ | 170 lbs | RB Choctaw | 2026 State OK had an outstanding moment early in the first quarter when he got loose on his first carry of the game for a 58-yard touchdown run. That was the majority of the production that Morgan had against Westmoore. He would finish with seven carries for 71 yards and the lengthy touchdown. But moving forward, we think that Morgan has a chance to be the top option at running back. Morgan is incredibly slippery with the ball in his hands. We’ll be interested to see how Choctaw continues to use him on offense. They’ll get creative with getting him out in space with the ball.
