IOWA CITY, Iowa – Believe it or not, high school football practice is off and running this week The first games are less than a month away.
To get us prepared, we’re listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we’ve covered at the links above.
We’re digging in on defense. Here are the Class 1A defensive backs:
Adam Baier, ’25, Red Oak – Baier piled up 80.0 tackles (50 solo, 12.0 for loss) with an interception and a sack as a sophomore in ’22. He also returned kicks and punts. His 10th-grade highlights open with a couple of hard hits, highlighting his physicality. He sheds blocks well and shows a burst to the ball.

Many of the clips are him carving up opponents as a running back. The few defensive clips reveal an athletic safety that reads and reacts well.
Jake Moore, ’24, Sigourney/Keota – Moore was the lone non-senior among the guys on the IPSWA Class 1A all-state last year. He intercepted three passes, returning one of them for a touchdown. He also accumulated 38.0 tackles (21 solo, 5.5 for loss). He rushed for two touchdowns and completed 6 of 9 passes on offense along with returning punts and kicks. He does not have any video of him playing on his Hudl page.
Caleb Cook, ’24, Pleasantville – As a junior in ’22, Cook produced 54.0 tackles (31 solo, 2.0 tackles) for the Trojans. He added a sack and an interception he returned 42 yards. In them, you see a defensive back that stands out in run support with good timing in coverage.
Nick Neuroth, ’24, Aplington-Parkersburg – Neuroth’s junior highlights on Hudl give us a talented two-way player that impacts the game on both sides of the ball. As a defensive back, he holds up well against the run and the pass. He reads the play well and breaks quickly on the ball. He registered 45.5 tackles (32 solo). He caught a touchdown pass, and served as the team’s main punt and kick returner.
Tanner Lynott, ’26, West Sioux – As a freshman in ’22, Lynott rolled up 42.4 tackles (32 solo, 6.5 for loss) with 3.0 sacks and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He rushed for three touchdowns and averaged 28.1 yards on 14 kick returns. He illustrates his ability to disrupt offenses while lining up at different spots on the defense. He’s fast and physical, and exciting in the return game.

He added 2.0 tackles for loss, and averaged 19.5 yards on 12 kick returns and 14.1 on 10 punt returns.
