No better time than the present to start looking ahead at the 2023 campaign. Highlighting top returners helps refresh our memories and prepare us for what’s ahead.
Let’s analyze seven difference makers among Class 8-Player quarterbacks:
Shane Helmick Shane Helmick 6'2" | 215 lbs | LB Moravia | 2024 IA , ’24, Moravia – As a junior in ’22, Helmick (6-2, 200) threw for 39 touchdown passes with only four interceptions in the environment of eight-player football that sees high-scoring games. He rushed for 10 scores and averaged 8.1 yards per carry. He added 2 interceptions, 7.0 TFLs and 2.5 sacks on defense. His highlights on offense show a powerful arm and a running threat. You can witness that same athleticism and explosiveness on defense.
Beau Goodwin, ’24, Kingsley-Pierson – Goodwin (6-4, 190) has shown he’s a well-rounded athlete in football, basketball, track and baseball. His football highlights are limited on his Hudl page. You should watch them. They reveal what looks like a man competing against boys. He threw for 2,068 yards and 30 touchdowns with only eight interceptions in ’22. He ran for 5.3 yards per carry and six scores.
Isaac Clark Isaac Clark 5'10" | 135 lbs | QB Gladbrook Reinbeck | 2024 IA , ’24, Gladbrook-Reinbeck – During ’22, Clark (6-1, 170) averaged 18.1 yards per completion with 30 touchdowns and only five picks. He also racked up 608 yards and 15 scores rushing. On defense, he posted 8.0 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and an interception as a linebacker. He can spin it, as you can see during his junior highlights. He has good footwork and feels pressure well.
Brody Pryor Brody Pryor 5'11" | 150 lbs | QB Woodbine | 2026 State IA , ’26, Woodbine – Pryor’s Hudl page features individual clips capturing some of his 30 touchdown passes as a freshman in ’22. The 5-foot-11, 150-pounder threw for 2,327 yards and also intercepted a pass on defense. He shows a strong arm with a quick release and does a nice job with play fakes.
Chase Spieker, ’25, Anita CAM – Unfortunately, I couldn’t find highlights of Spieker. I do know that he threw 26 touchdowns against only seven interceptions as a sophomore last fall, when he completed 65.3 percent of his passes. He’s a four-sport athlete that contributed in basketball, track and baseball as a sophomore.
Noah John Noah John 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Grand View Christian | 2024 IA , ’24, Grandview Christian – At 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, John offers the size helpful at the quarterback position. His junior highlights feature a signal caller with a smooth throwing motion and good follow-through. Ball placement stands out with him putting it on receivers and out of harm’s way. He tossed 24 touchdowns with just five picks in ’22. He added 720 yards and 17 scores on the ground.
Gabe Funk, ’25, Lenox – There’s not much football film out there on Funk (6-1, 160). His Hudl film contains only one clip. It certainly highlights his athleticism but is a running play. He threw for 15 touchdowns with only three interceptions and averaged 16.7 yards per completion. He rolled up 717 yards and nine scores rushing. He picked off three passes, one of which was a Pick-6. He led the basketball team in scoring (18.2 PPG) this winter, and finished second in the Class 1A 110 hurdles and third in the 400 hurdles at state track last month.
