Year after year, tight ends from around the state head off to make an immediate impact at top college programs across the country. These rising juniors are next up from the Illinois tight end pipeline.
The 6’3, 245 lbs tight end from Hersey was a touchdown machine last season. Farrell tallied 10 touchdowns on 34 receptions. He was a threat in the red zone and scored multiple ways, including being split out for one-on-one jump balls and hole shots over the middle of the field. He also impressed with his route running and speed once catching the ball in the open field. Because of this combination of size and speed, Farrell is extremely tough to tackle after the catch. However, his best asset may be his blocking. Farrell is a nasty and physical blocker who uses his hands and leverage to drive defenders to the ground to finish on blocks. Farrell is a definition of a true tight end, who can catch and run just as well as he blocks. Look for Farrell to have a monster junior season.
Highlights
Zvonar is a do-it-all tight end for one of the state’s top programs in Lincoln-Way East. The 6’4, 215 lbs tight end impressed in his sophomore campaign. What stands out immediately is his blocking. Zvonar is one of the more polished blockers we have seen, as he uses physicality, leverage, and technique to win his blocking matchups. Zvonar positions his body well and delivers a strong punch on contact. He always seems to keep his feet moving to finishing through opposing defenders. And while Zvonar did not see many throws his way, he showcased good speed and soft hands when catching the ball. As Zvonar adds weight and becomes more of a focal point in the pass game in his junior season, he could finish the season as one of the top tight end in the Class of 2025.
The big bodied Naperville product shined in his sophomore season for Neuqua Valley. Mascari is a 6’4, 230 lbs tight end who is starting to put college coaches on notice. Mascari impressed in the passing game, showing the ability to run smooth routes and make contested catches over the middle of the field. He is a red zone threat because of his size, but he also catches the ball with ease. Mascari is equally as impressive when blocking. He locks his hands on defensive ends or approaching outside linebackers at the first level and drives them backwards with force. When working to the second level, Mascari takes smart angles towards inside linebackers and uses his body to out leverage them. Heading into his junior season, Mascari is flying up recruiting boards across the country.
Goken was a pass catching threat at the sophomore level for Wheaton-Warrenville South. The 6’3, 220 lbs tight end averaged 17 yards per catch and tallied 5 touchdowns on the season. Goken was a security blanket for the Tigers offense, catching anything thrown in his general direction. He shows the ability to run smooth routes and understands how to improvise when the quarterback is flushed out of the pocket. Goken makes tough catches look easy. He can beat you from the line of scrimmage, in the slot, or when split out. Keep an eye out for Goken in his upcoming varsity season, as his stock is rising quickly.
