Continue ReadingWe begin the Northeast 2023 preview with the two prospects presumed to headline the quarterback position, with leader Sabor Stevens moving on to the next level. Tough shoes to fill, although Juniors Mahir Jordan Mahir Jordan 5’11” | 160 lbs | ATH Northeast | 2025 State PA and Lamont Brown Lamont Brown 6’0″ | QB Martin Luther King | 2025 PA are more than capable enough to fill said shoes.
We begin with Mahir Happy Jordan, a promising prospect who has tape to his name. Although Stevens led the way last Fall for the Vikings, Jordan still got reps behind center. Dual-threat, although he needs to make strides as a passer, Mahir Jordan Mahir Jordan 5’11” | 160 lbs | ATH Northeast | 2025 State PA is expected to provide a wide range of skills that the Viking coaching staff can work around. He’s capable of throwing the football, he is far from clueless behind center. He can see and read the middle of the field well, Jordan hits timing routes well, often hitting the out-breaking routes in Flood concepts promptly. He’s going to be able to distribute the ball to his weapons, yet we know there is more to playing the position than that. Jordan is going to have to make strides between the ears, with a new offensive system, moreso new vernacular to work with, this is tough for any quarterback at any level to deal with. Jordan will likely rely on his athleticism, which makes complete sense. The Viking coaching staff will likely lean into that notion, as it’s an area of comfort for Jordan, as well as some of the members of the offensive line. Read-option sets are likely to be used, again, a comfort area for Jordan. He can work with four/five wideouts split out, widening up the front seven will provide more space to work with. Jordan will eventually be ranked, expected to do so before the season begins.
Lamont Brown Lamont Brown 6’0″ | QB Martin Luther King | 2025 PA Jr., formerly out of MLK, is a kid I had high hopes for dating back 2 and a half years ago. Those high hopes are still there, especially considering the opportunity he has in front of him. The 2023 Viking class is long gone, I hope he, as well as every other prospect on this list, understands the opportunity presented to them. This football team is likely looking for a leader beyond the coaching staff to provide confidence heading into the Fall, that can be Jordan or Lamont. Brown brings a vastly different approach to the quarterback position. Although athletic in his own right, where Brown will likely provide value is in his build. Now 6’3, 215, Brown will provide a much more stable pocket, with a likely intent to stretch the field with his arm.
Coach Nase and staff have an interesting twosome to work with here, both are likely to see the field, both are likely to place on our ranks before the season begins. Excited to see what both prospects bring to the table.
Wayne Morris-Daniel
Wayne Morris-Daniel
The theme of this preview is obvious. New names in new places. Two seniors, Wayne Morris-Daniel and Ernsaun Moore Ernsaun Moore 5’7″ | 125 lbs | ATH Northeast | 2024 State PA , are expected to grow into prominent roles on both sides of the ball. Both Morris-Daniel and Moore have very limited tape on film, so discussing what traits they could provide at WR or DB is tough. In speaking with those in the know, the two are coming along quickly in pre-season practices and training camp. Both seniors provide similar athletic profiles, especially when plugging in some clips from their Hudls. The two above will need someone to throw too, expect these two to act as two-way weapons moving forward.
There’s a junior who will find himself in a similar role as Moore and Morris-Daniel. This being a prospect we are all too familiar with. Dymere Durham Dymere Durham 5’11” | ATH Northeast | 2025 State PA , former camp standout and top 125 prospects, will more than likely find himself in a similar two-way role like the one he served last Fall, just on an expanded level. Durham’s earned some trust for the most part, considering he’s already carved out a DB role dating back to last Fall. Sophomore tape shows hes a viable option in the passing game too. Durham has the upside to bolster his stock further than it’s ever climbed, better than it was last year or when he was working at AB Wood. This could bode well for his recruitment, the more eyes on him the better.
Justin Wilson Justin Wilson 6’1″ | 260 lbs | OL Northeast | 2025 State PA , a transfer out of West Catholic High School, will now suit up in Red and Black. A center will ideal size, also a linemen who can double as a guard on either side of the center if need be. A lineman who can play multiple positions is a quick indication you have a smart football player in your hands. Considering the exodus of talent, Justin Wilson Justin Wilson 6’1″ | 260 lbs | OL Northeast | 2025 State PA might be tasked with playing both ways in the trenches. Wilson has quality second-level blocks when in run-blocking sets, good reacher, down blocker too. His tape should warrant a future ranking.
You can make the case for recently re-ranked linebacker George Truitt George Truitt 6’2″ | 200 lbs | LB Northeast | 2024 State PA to be the most valuable prospect on the roster. A riser, one that I’m sending to college coaches left and right after I recently saw his new junior tape. 6’2, a lean 210-pounds, Truitt’s tape conveys a prototypical and ideal collegiate MLB prospect who can disrupt gap integrity, as well as be a force in stopping the run. Truitt is just as physically gifted as many backs he’ll match up against in the pub, so running and reacting to the run is going to work in his favor. Love how he was utilized as a blitzer, either off the edge or through the A-B gaps. At this level, I don’t think there’s much you can throw on the young man’s plate that he couldn’t handle. There aren’t a large sum of coverage reps to speak of on tape, that doesn’t mean he’s not suitable to drop back into zones and play the pass, would love to see it on future tape though. Truitt recently picked up an offer out of Merrimack.
Deshawn Woodhouse Deshawn Woodhouse 5'10" | 200 lbs | LB Northeast | 2025 State PA
Deshawn Woodhouse Deshawn Woodhouse 5'10" | 200 lbs | LB Northeast | 2025 State PA
Bit of an old-school feel at linebacker, should play off of Truitt well. Deshawn Woodhouse Deshawn Woodhouse 5’10” | 200 lbs | LB Northeast | 2025 State PA , a backer who might be unassuming when you take a look at him, is a real thumper manning the middle of the field. Truitt can play any backer position against Pub competition, the coaching staff can trust Woodhouse to read and react to plug holes in the trenches. His eval might make him look like a role player, yet he’s a serious difference-maker if he’s on point. TFLs galore when hitting gaps. Closes the gap to the BC really well, good pursuit. These two will likely lead the team in tackles.
The three prospects listed are expected to burst onto the scene. Three factors indicate such a notion. One, the coaching staff has specifically pointed out these three big men as potential prospects whose play could garner collegiate looks at some point down the line. Two, their size and age. Jeremiah Jaje Jeremiah Jaje 6’4″ | 335 lbs | OL Northeast | 2024 State PA is inexperienced and is a senior, yet you can’t deny his 6’4 frame in the trenches. Naseem Wertz Naseem Wertz 6’3″ | 215 lbs | DL Northeast | 2025 State PA is gaining steam among coaches who recruit the Pub. Xavier Brown Xavier Brown 6’2″ | 230 lbs | DL Northeast | 2026 State PA is a 6’2 sophomore who is likely to own the trenches for years to come at Northeast. Third factor to consider is the new rep opportunities that will be afforded to this trio. With names leaving, someone has to fill the gap. I’m excited to look back at this months from now and see how this trio affected the W/L column. All are expected to be ranked at some point down the line.
