IOWA CITY, Iowa – We’ve reached mid-July. A new high school football season is right around the corner. It will be here before we know it.
To help get us prepared, we’re listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we’ve covered at the links above.
We’ve finished up on offense. Now comes the D-Line. We move on to Class 4A:
Brody Clubb Brody Clubb 6'3" | 245 lbs | DL Clear Creek-Amana | 2025 State IA , ’25, Clear Creek Amana – Clubb (6-3, 240) received great news when Iowa State offered a scholarship after he showed out at its camp in early June. More opportunities should arrive with an expected step forward in ’23, his third year as a starter. He’s a strong, athletic kid willing to work on improving. Clubb’s sophomore film is entertaining as he embraces physicality. That shows up on both sides of the ball. He finished last season with 31 solo tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
Wyatt DeWitt, ’24, Indianola – DeWitt (6-2, 225) enjoyed a strong junior season last fall when he recorded 26 solo tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. He was the only non-senior named first-team all-state by the IPSWA. He’s a prototypical rush edge, mixing size with athleticism for production. It’s on display during his junior highlight reel. He also stays on assignment and sets a good edge.
Will Clark, ’24, Norwalk – I’d love to see a highlight reel of Clark based on his statistics and the clips included in his Hudl Profile. I’m not sure what you’d call his position in this defense, but he’s a heck of a football player. You’ll find him when watching the football on a given play. He racked up 55 solo tackles (15.0 for loss) and 8.0 sacks. His highlights in a game against Lewis Central last season are entertaining.
Ike Thacher Ike Thacher 5'10" | 190 lbs | DL Fort Madison | 2024 IA , ’24, Fort Madison – Thacher (6-0, 220) contributed 18 solo tackles, 13.5 stop for loss and 5.0 sacks in last fall on a team that reached the playoffs, finishing with a 7-3 record. He does a good job making plays while staying in his lane as you can watch on his junior highlight film. The approach helps him keep the play in front of him, and is effective against the run and in pass rushing.
Trent Patton Trent Patton 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Glenwood | 2024 State IA , ’24, Glenwood – The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Patton is a problem for opposing offensive linemen, as you can see during his junior highlight reel. Whether he’s coming off the edge or lining up inside, Patton disrupts plans with an impressive combination of strength and speed. The skill set led to him recording 29 solo tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Alex Allen, ’24, Le Mars – Like with Clark, Allen’s Hudl Page holds a limited about of video. The few that are present show us an athlete with a quick burst and lateral quickness. As a junior in ’22, he produced 33 solo tackles, 11.5 stops for loss and 6.0 sacks. He also stands out on the wrestling mat.
Wyatt Weter, ’24, Newton – Weter (6-0, 210) supplied 24 solo tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks during the Cardinals’ 7-3 season that ended in the first round of the ’22 playoffs at Carlisle. His junior highlights reveal a difficult matchup for offensive linemen. He gets off of the edge with a good burst.
