It’s been camp season in Oklahoma and Prep Redzone Oklahoma traveled all over the state to see some of the top teams and players that are going to making plenty of noise this fall. Be sure to check back on the website for various camp reports and follow us on Twitter @PrepRedzoneOK to see where we’re going next! In this post, we’re putting a spotlight on the Bixby team camp. Who stood out, who emerged and much more! Check out our breakdown on just some of the standouts from Bixby, Edmond Memorial, Midwest City and Union.
Union 2024 defensive back Devon Jordan Devon Jordan 6’1″ | DB Union | 2024 State OK has had an unbelievable offseason as he’s become one of the more sought after 2024 prospects in Oklahoma’s 2024 class. He has offers from all over the country but he makes this breakdown not for his ability on defense, but what he showed on offense. Jordan was burning opposing defensive backs at the wide receiver position and was arguably Union’s top playmaker at the wide receiver position on Friday. More times than not, Jordan is going to be the best athlete on the field this fall so it makes sense that Union is going to try to utilize him in as many ways as possible. That worked well in 2016 when they won a state championship and star cornerback Tre Brown ended up being a threat at receiver and in the return game.
The first of several standouts from Bixby is 2024 Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5’11” | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK at the linebacker position. Puckett was a breakout star for the Bixby defense last season as he was a big part of a defensive unit that we considered the hardest hitting defense in the state. And when you watch Puckett at the linebacker position, it’s easy to see why. After seeing countless teams over the last several weeks, Puckett is definitely up there in terms of the hardest hitter in the state. Puckett and the Bixby front seven is going to be the strength of the Spartan defense. Last year, it was the secondary but they graduate everyone and have to reload. So we expect the front seven and specifically the linebacker group to lead the way for the Spartans early on this season.
Another defensive standout from the camp in Bixby was Edmond Memorial 2024 linebacker Izaiah Spotwood Izaiah Spotwood 6’2″ | LB Edmond Memorial | 2024 State OK when he lined up as a defensive lineman. Spotwood’s size is your prototypical linebacker size but on Friday, he was lining up as a defensive end and he was causing a lot of problems for opposing offensive linemen. Because not only does Spotwood have a quick get off and speed to work around bigger linemen, he’s also not small and he showcased his ability to power through guys and get into the backfield. We think that Spotwood could have a very big fall and things continue to point up for the Edmond Memorial standout. The Bulldogs took the first step to becoming a consistent playoff team last fall. They look to continue that this season.
Midwest City is coming off a district championship and they’re not expecting to let go of the crown anytime soon. But the Bombers are going to have a few new names, especially on the offensive side of the ball. One of the positions of need is quarterback after a three-year starter has graduated. But emerging at the camp in Bixby was 2024 signal caller Kenneth Colston Kenneth Colston 6’0″ | QB Midwest City | 2024 OK . The new Bomber QB looked good in the various mini games when we were watching on Friday. And according to the Midwest City coaches, he had a very good week throughout the three days in Bixby. Colston definitely provides something different to the quarterback position but he has a strong offensive line in front of him and should produce for the Bombers this fall.
Even though Bixby is still working through a quarterback competition, we have no doubts that the Spartans are still going to have one of the best offenses in the state. First off, it starts up front and they’re going to have one of the top offensive line units in 6A-1. Then, you look at the skill position players they bring back and whoever is going to be the quarterback is going to have weapons. We continue to be impressed by 2024 wide receiver Kordell Gouldsby Kordell Gouldsby 5’11” | WR Bixby | 2024 State OK and his ability to make plays in the open field. It was just an early June team camp session, so Bixby wasn’t going to get real creative with how they used Gouldsby but that will come this fall. Gouldsby has the chance to be Bixby’s top receiver this season but he’s also going to get some carries as well. He won’t be a traditional running back but he’s going to be arguably Bixby’s top offensive playmaker.
We’ve watched Union 2024 prospect Lane Wood Lane Wood 6’4″ | 235 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK since the spring of his freshman season. Ever since then, we’ve had Wood listed as a tight end because that’s been the primary position he’s played. But he TE depth chart is pretty full at Union this season and one area of need is linebacker. And Wood was playing with the first team defense at linebacker quite a bit on Friday. He had a good day roaming around and making plays. It doesn’t feel like a position that is completely foreign to him and he could end up becoming an impact player on that side of the ball for the Redhawks this fall. As Union looks for some new names to emerge at the linebacker position, Wood could be a familiar face that steps into that role and does a good job.
