Continue ReadingNow that the 2022 season of high school football has come to a conclusion and we’re in the midst of the offseason, it’s time to look back at some of the top talent out of the Bluegrass State last year. After several positional breakdowns of both offensive and defensive prospects, it’s time to evaluate players that can contribute on both sides of the ball. Here’s my list of the top 2024 ATH prospects in the state of Kentucky to watch for next season.

Caden Woolum Caden Woolum 6'3" | 185 lbs | ATH Belfry | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-2, 184-pound athlete out of Belfry High School, was a gamechanger on both sides of the ball during his junior stint with the Pirates. This past season, Woolum led the team on the ground, recording 88 rush attempts for 978 yards and 16 touchdowns. On the defensive side, Woolum was one of the top tacklers on the roster, picking up 52 total tackles on the year, including 15 solo stops and 37 assisted takedowns. Woolum also picked up three interceptions for seven yards. In addition to his great size and speed, what makes Woolum so tough is his overall field awareness and aggression. Woolum should certainly be an intriguing athlete to watch closely this upcoming season.

Parker Chaney Parker Chaney 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Lexington Christian Academy | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-0, 190-pound athlete out of Lexington Christian Academy, was a crucial component on both sides of the ball during his junior season with the Eagles. On the ground, Chaney recorded 14 rush attempts for 40 yards and one touchdown. Chaney also led all receivers on the team, hauling in 83 receptions for 1,175 yards and seven touchdowns. On the defensive end, Chaney collected 20 total tackles, including 15 solo stops and five assisted takedowns. Chaney also collected one interception. In addition to his great size and speed, Chaney has great game knowledge, allowing him to make an impact on both sides of the ball. Chaney should continue to make an impact in his upcoming senior year of high school football.

Brach Rice Brach Rice 6'3" | 220 lbs | LB Dixie Heights | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-3, 220-pound athlete out of Dixie Heights High School, was a massive offensive and defensive weapon for the Colonels during his junior year of high school football. Rice made 22 completions out of 39 attempts for 369 yards and three touchdowns under center. Rice was also a major contributor on the ground, recording 92 rush attempts for 605 yards and nine touchdowns. Rice also hauled in one reception for 57 yards. On the defensive side, Brach led the team in tackles, picking up 126 total tackles, including 100 solo stops, 26 assisted takedowns, 12 tackles for loss and five sacks. Rice has excellent size, speed and aggression, making him a playmaker on both sides of the ball. Rice will definitely be interesting to watch closely next season.

Jd Crump Jd Crump 6'2" | 205 lbs | ATH Hart County | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-2, 205-pound athlete out of Hart County High School, made a huge impact on both sides of the ball during his junior stint with the Raiders last year. Crump closed out the season as the team’s leading rusher, picking up 149 rush attempts for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Crump also hauled in two receptions for 52 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Crump recorded 85 total tackles, including 30 solo stops, 55 assisted takedowns, seven tackles for loss and five sacks. Crump also forced one fumble. In addition to his size and speed, Crump’s overall knowledge of both ends make him a valuable player entering this upcoming season.

Daniel Thomas Daniel Thomas 5'9" | 180 lbs | ATH Bell County | 2024 State KY , a 5-foot-9, 175-pound athlete out of Bell County High School, was one of the most significant offensive and defensive contributors on the Bobcats’ roster last season. At the helm of the offense, Thomas contributed seven completions out of 10 attempts for 101 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Thomas led the team with 208 rush attempts for 2,228 yards and 29 touchdowns. Thomas additionally led the team in receiving, collecting 12 receptions for 360 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, Thomas recorded 87 total tackles, including 70 solo stops, 17 assisted takedowns, six tackles for loss and five sacks. Thomas also forced one fumble and made two fumble recoveries. In addition to the toughness he plays with, Thomas makes such an impact on both sides due to his overall size, speed, athleticism and game knowledge. Thomas should continue to establish success on the field as a senior.

TelTel Long TelTel Long 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Greewood | 2024 State KY , a 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete out of Greenwood High School, was one of the most significant offensive and defensive weapons on the Gators’ roster last season. On the offensive side of the ball, Long led the team in rushing, picking up 122 rush attempts for 869 yards and four touchdowns. Long also led the team in receiving, hauling in 26 receptions for 391 yards and four touchdowns. On the defensive side, Long recorded 36 total tackles, including 27 solo stops, nine assisted takedowns and one tackle for loss. Long also picked up one interception for 12 yards. Long contributes excellent toughness, speed and game knowledge, making him a gamechanger on both offense and defense. Long should be a huge playmaker during his upcoming senior stint.
Kelson McKinney Kelson McKinney 5'11" | 215 lbs | ATH Green County | 2024 State KY , a 5-foot-11, 215-pound athlete out of Green County High School, was one of the most impressive offensive and defensive performers on the Dragons’ roster last year. As a junior, McKinney led the team in receiving, picking up 31 receptions for 656 yards and nine touchdowns. McKinney was additionally the second-best tackler on the team, recording 76 total tackles, including 53 solo stops, 23 assisted takedowns and 6.5 tackles for loss. McKinney also forced two fumbles and made two fumble recoveries. McKinney brings a lot of energy to both sides of the ball, utilizing his size, speed and game knowledge on the field. As a senior, McKinney should be an intriguing athlete to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
