Continue ReadingIOWA CITY, Iowa – I started this project on Dec. 1 and have featured 84 players before adding seven more prospects you can read about below. I wasn’t sure we would approach 100 seniors-to-be but have found it’s been easy doing so.
It’s wonderful seeing some of these guys pick up scholarship offers and opportunities during the last several months. More will be on the way, that’s for sure.
Here’s a look at more Class of 2024 student-athletes with next-level game:
Caleb Moore Caleb Moore 6'0" | 180 lbs | LB Lewis Central | 2024 State IA , ATH, Lewis Central – Moore totaled 33.0 tackles (5.0 for loss) and three interceptions, and caught 32 passes for 136 yards as a junior. He showed off his athleticism on both sides of the ball for a team with a lot of mouths to feed on offense. I could see Moore at receiver at the next level but think he might be best served lining up at safety. His physicality pops off the tape. He sees the play early and flows smoothly to the ball. He shows a good speed burst in pursuit.

Tod Geiger Tod Geiger 6'1" | 240 lbs | DL Montezuma | 2024 IA , OL/DL, Montezuma – The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Geiger is young for his grade, according to his Hudl profile. The film is promising. It’s a matter of he and coaches finding where he fits positionally. His best bet might be as an “under-sized” defensive tackle but I could see him staying on the edge or playing inside on the offensive line. What stands out on his film is simple – he makes plays. He’s agile and uses his hands well on both sides of the line.

Brock Carpenter Brock Carpenter 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Western Dubuque | 2024 IA , ATH, Western Dubuque – Carpenter (6-0, 170) is another versatile athlete capable of helping a program on offense. That said, defense is where he could shine on the next level. He recorded 28.5 tackles (25 solo, 2.0 for loss), two sacks and three interceptions as a junior. He returned eight kicks with a 23.9-yard average, showing he can help on special teams. He’s fluid in the secondary with good recognition and break on the ball. He diagnoses plays well, which helps him break coverage and support the run.

Evan Beck, IOL/DL, Spirit Lake – At 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Beck moves really well. It’s a starter’s kit for a productive player on the next level if he remains fluid after adding mass and strength. He already overpowers opponents at his high school level and plays through the whistle. He drives really well with his legs and plays with good pad level. He lists center has his position on offense. He should definitely get a look there.

D.J. Vonnahme, ATH, Kuemper Catholic – All the kids we write about in this space should be receiving more attention from college coaches. And then there are the guys who really make you scratch your head. Vonnahme (6-4, 205) is one of those dudes. He stands out playing quarterback and that certainly could be his calling on the next level. However, the athleticism and understanding of the game allowing him to succeed at that spot also plays at defensive back. He throws with accuracy and touch, stationary and on the move. Defensively, he shows traits that could work as a deep safety or in the box.

Logan Courtney Logan Courtney 6'4" | 295 lbs | OL Pleasantville | 2024 IA , OL, Pleasantville – Courtney (6-4, 275) certainly looks the part of a college offensive lineman. He’s not just a big guy taking up space. His highlights feature someone light on his feet with good lateral movement. He uses his hands effectively in blocking and drives though opponents consistently when his pads are low. He plays with balance and well in space. Right tackle certainly makes sense. I also can envision a standout player inside.

Porter Reffer, ATH, Algona – Reffer (5-11, 160) only appeared in three games as a junior and was outstanding in them. He caught 11 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed 13 times for For 130 yards and a score. He runs crisp routes, mostly from the slot, and delivers in space. That translates well to special teams, where he averaged 25.5 yards on four kick returns in ’22. He does well eluding would-be tacklers and shows off good vision with the ball in his hands.
