Now that these rankings are published, I will be taking an in-depth look at each position for the class of 2024. After already covering the offensive side of the ball, I have turned my attention to the top defensive players in the class. With the defensive linemen and linebackers already taken care of, I will now move on to the top play makers on the back end of the defense. With that being said, here are our top defensive backs in the class of 2024 in the state of Kentucky.
Not only has Jeremiah Lowe Jeremiah Lowe 5’11” | DB Frederick Douglass | 2024 State KY proven himself to be the top defensive back in his class in the state of Kentucky but he is also one of the best overall players in the entire state. Lowe played a key role in the Broncos’ 5A State Championship run, finishing with 15 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions. Quarterbacks try to stay away from throwing in his direction as Lowe is a lock down corner on the outside. He shows great man coverage skills, opening his hips up and running with receivers to mirror their routes. When the ball is thrown in his direction, Lowe has shown the ability to fight across the receiver’s body to break up the pass or come away with the interception. He is also reliable against the run, showing the willingness to come downhill and make tackles in the open field. Jeremiah currently holds offers from Army, Boston College, Austin Peay, West Virginia, Missouri, Michigan, Kentucky, Western Michigan, Miami (OH), and Eastern Kentucky, and I expect more to come his way going into his senior year as he is a Power 5 caliber corner.
Joining Lowe at the opposite side of a very talented Broncos secondary is Terrion Hicks Terrion Hicks 5’11” | 170 lbs | DB Frederick Douglass | 2024 State KY . Hicks also had himself a solid junior season, finishing with 23 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He is a very physical corner on the outside that is impressive against the run. Hicks comes downhill in a hurry once he reads the run and fights through blocks on his way to the ball carrier. Once he gets to the ball carrier, Hicks does a great job of running his feet through contact to secure the tackle. Against the pass, Hicks shows the ability to be very productive in both man and zone coverage. When the ball is thrown his way, he shows the ability to break on the ball with perfect timing to make a play. Hicks currently holds offers from Army, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Austin Peay, Northwestern, Western Michigan, Eastern Kentucky, and Miami (OH), and I expect that list to continue to grow as he has the talent to play at the Division I level.
Montel Campbell Montel Campbell 6’1″ | 195 lbs | DB Ballard Of Louisville,Ky | 2024 State KY is a player that quickly climbed up our rankings this past season. He had a very impressive junior year, finishing with 76 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and three interceptions. Campbell lines up at safety and does a great job of reading the play. When the ball is thrown near him, Campbell has shown the ability to break on the ball with perfect timing to catch interceptions in stride. He returned one interception for a touchdown this season. Campbell also is very reliable against the run, coming downhill quickly to fill the lane. Once he gets to the ball carrier, Campbell does a great job of exploding through contact to secure the tackle. While Campbell doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect some to come for him soon as he has received some college interest and definitely has the talent to play at the next level.

Another defensive back that quickly climbed up our rankings this past season is Bowling Green’s Wick Dotson Wick Dotson 5’10” | 190 lbs | DB Bowling Green | 2024 State KY . He played a key role in Bowling Green’s run to the 5A State Championship Game, finishing with 70 tackles, two tackles for loss, one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, and five interceptions. Dotson is an impressive play maker at safety, showing the ability to read the quarterback and break on the ball with perfect timing to come away with the interception. He also shows the ability to come downhill in a hurry when the ball is thrown short to quickly make a tackle in the open field. Against the run, Dotson shows the ability to fill the lane and provide support as a very reliable open field tackler. Wick doesn’t currently hold any offers but he should be on the radar of college coaches as he has the talent to play somewhere at the next level.

Wrapping up our top five defensive backs in the class of 2024 is Beni Mwamba Beni Mwamba 6’0″ | 185 lbs | DB Dixie Heights | 2024 State KY from Dixie Heights. Beni jumped onto our radar with a strong junior season in which he finished with 36 tackles, three tackles for loss, one interception, and a forced fumble. He lines up on the outside at corner and has great man coverage skills. Mwamba has shown the ability to open up and run with receivers to mirror their routes all over the field. When the ball is thrown his way, he is able to time the pass and use his athleticism to make a play on the ball at its highest point. He is also very reliable against the run, showing the ability to read the play and come downhill to make tackles in the open field. While Beni doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect some to come his way soon as he has the talent to play at the next level and has been receiving a lot of interest from college programs.
