The official start of the 7v7 football season begins next week but prior to kicking off the year, both the Mid-TN Wolfpack and TN Savages met up at Brentwood Academy on Saturday afternoon for an inter-squad scrimmage between the two programs that was action packed and a great opportunity for both teams to get better.
Before jumping into the scrimmage portion of the day, both squads worked by themselves before moving into situational work from the 40, 20 and red zone areas. Running this portion of practice benefitted each team as both showed some struggles but also learned from those mistakes to bounce back.
The situational work lasted about an hour and it was some extensive work that allowed both teams to understand what concepts they were running on both sides of the ball to develop further as a cohesive squad.
After individual team practice and situational work, it was time to move into the scrimmage portion of practice and it was very active with both teams doing some chirping but also making plays.
Both teams competed through three 20 minute scrimmages with the TN Savages 15 & under team getting some work as well. Score was being kept, however nothing was official but it was a good test for both squads and an opportunity to see where each other are before jumping into actual tournaments, starting next week.
Here are some of the top notes from yesterday’s scrimmage ……
– Both the Mid-TN Wolfpack and the TN Savages saw some good work yesterday from their quarterbacks. Rising senior Braden Streeter Braden Streeter 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB CPA | 2024 State TN put forth an impressive day, showing several college level throws as well as the ability to read the defense. Streeter sports good size as well as strong mechanics. He definitely has the look and talent to make it to the next level.
Mt. Pleasant senior Nick Brown Nick Brown 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Mt. Pleasant | 2024 State TN had a solid day as well. This 6’2 passer sports good mechanics along with nice mobility in the pocket. He showed yesterday the ability to check down and take what the defense gave him, showing me that he is mature and understands what he must do at quarterback.
Their counterparts in Elisha Nieves Elisha Nieves 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Centennial | 2024 TN (Centennial) and Silas Teat Silas Teat 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Marshall Co. | 2024 State TN (Marshall Co.) flashed excellent play as well on Saturday. Nieves put together a few strong drives throughout the scrimmage with his strongest trait on the day being his arm strength. Teat is a cerebral passer that knows how to throw into windows. He did have some passes yesterday that he would have liked to have back but overall, Teat had a solid day against the Savages.
– The best overall player on the day was 2024 CPA two-way talent Ondre Evans Ondre Evans 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB CPA | 2024 State TN . The 6’2 athletic machine was near unstoppable on the day, especially at receiver where he made several wow catches, including one in the back of the end zone where he caught the ball over two defenders while placing one foot into the corner of the end zone.
Evans is every bit the Power Five offered prospect he is billed out to be. This dude has nice size, great length and can run. The Lions star prospect was hard to handle yesterday but one guy for the Mid-TN Wolfpack took upon the challenge of guarding Evans and he handled himself very well.
West Creek cornerback Jayden Hines Jayden Hines 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB West Creek | 2024 State TN had the responsibility of guarding Evans all day and while the CPA stud had shining moments, Hines had his share of wins too. Sporting height, length and the ability to turn and run, Hines used his athletic traits yesterday to keep up with Evans and other standout receivers for the TN Savages and displayed nice coverage along with the ability to make adjustments on the fly.
Hines does need to keep working on hips and fluid movements but upside is there for this Clarksville area defensive back to reach the college level and develop further into a dependable starter.
– One guy who impressed me on Saturday was rising Ensworth junior linebacker Sam Haley Sam Haley 6'4" | 215 lbs | LB Ensworth | 2025 State TN . This is a big dude with long arms that is very active and vocal on the field. He plays the middle linebacker role but has the physical traits to possibly work the edge as well. Haley holds several offers thus far, including one from South Carolina and many others will follow soon as more coaches look over this impressive defensive prospect.
– Developing little by little, 2025 Cannon Co. (TN) linebacker Zae Odom Zae Odom 6'0" | 195 lbs | LB Cannon Co. | 2025 TN is vastly improving every time he steps on the field this offseason and yesterday’s scrimmage against the TN Savages was another solid day for this Middle Tennessee prospect. Odom is a big dude with a wide, strong upper body that has shown flashes this winter of being able to run and cover out of his zone. He did that on Saturday and continued to prove that he is a prospect worth watching over the next two years.
– Two wideouts for the Mid-TN Wolfpack continued to put together solid offseason performances yesterday in Centennial rising senior Jyrine Otey and Greenwood (Ky) two-way talent Elmo Stewart. Otey is a freak athlete that just has a knack for making plays while Stewart is a focused young man with great size and arm length that can develop on either side of the ball in college.
