As one class graduates, the next senior class becomes the primary recruiting target from college programs. The class of 2024 has previewed elite talent among its ranks with players who have proven themselves as legitimate college prospects capable of playing at the highest level.
This article will briefly examine five safeties from the 2024 class who should be high on the recruiting boards, especially for the in-state programs.
Chapa is one of the better coverage safeties in the state and should be on the radar of every D1 program that scouts Colorado, especially CU. He does a fantastic job at understanding and properly using his leverage, angles, and athleticism to finish disrupt plays with interceptions, pass breakups, or physical tackles. Chapa has superb techniques that allow him to flow in coverage and make plays all over the field, which earned him an offer from Lindenwood and makes him a must-get for in-state schools.
Harris is an excellent coverage safety with outstanding instincts and athleticism. He reads the field well while continuously gaining depth as routes push down the field, keeping a tight lid on deep routes. His ability to break on the beginning twitch of the quarterback’s throwing motion shows his strong understanding of the game and his position. Harris played a significant role on one of the more dominant defenses in the state, earning a 4A state title and an offer from Lindenwood.
Highlights
Wright is an outstanding athlete with versatile skills that allow him to play at every level on the defense. He can line up at linebacker depth to play from the outside or the interior and use his speed to cover against receivers or shoot gaps to blow up the run. His size and speed make him a nightmare defender when coming off the edge as a rusher or stalking the underneath coverage areas when defending against the pass. Wright is an ideal candidate for a hybrid strong safety role for a top-tier program looking for a do-all defender.
Highlights
Guthrie is a ball-hawking safety and an ideal over-top defender that defensive coordinators and cornerbacks can rely on when in press-man coverage. He reads the field well and knows when to break on the ball. He uses his speed and acceleration to cover against deep throws and quickly close the distance between himself and the check-down receivers or ball carriers. Guthrie is a standout safety with great instincts and the physicality needed to deliver powerful hits, which puts him in the category of players to add to see in person.
Highlights
Baca is a physical strong safety who does an excellent job at filling in the box and defending against the run or covering a slot receiver against the pass. He flies downhill and rallies to the ball with great speed and initiates powerful hits upon contact. He has a balanced set of skills that allow him to line up in multiple positions on the field, including the interior and the edge of the box. Baca is a talented athlete with the potential to become a viable addition to a college program, especially for an in-state school.
