Continue ReadingLast June Davis received an offer from Purdue, and he didn’t take long to determine that West Lafayette was the place he wanted to be. He would commit to the Boilermakers a couple of days later. Davis played both linebacker and defensive end for the North Union Wildcats. I like Davis as a rush end at Purdue. Purdue has done a great job of developing and producing top shelf pass rushers over the years and I think Davis is kind of clay that new defensive line coach Brick Haley can mold into a fierce pass rusher. He has the athleticism to move laterally and the quickness and bend to get to the edge. He’s strong at the point of attack, and with added weight/strength he’s going to be really good in setting the edge. Davis is one of those players who simply will not be outworked. For this reason I’m excited to see Owen get to school and make use of a Power 5 strength and conditioning program and training table.
After a committing to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the fall of 2021 he would go onto decommit in November of 2022. It was at that point that Hewlett would pick up an offer from the University of Michigan. Jason would waste little time in committing to the Wolverines. Hewlett was used all over the field for the Chaney Cowboys. In Ann Arbor however, he will focus on the defensive side of the ball. At 6’4 220 he has an elite combination of size, speed, and athleticism. After talking to Jason, the plans are for him to play on the defensive side of the ball. What position that will be is yet to be determined based on how he continues to fill out. At this point he’s looking at either defensive back or linebacker. He could be scary good at either position. He fires and accelerates so quickly and easily. He the speed to run plays down from any spot on the field, and the ball skills of a top wide receiver. Hewlett can lay some vicious hits as well. Needless to say, I believe the future is very bright for this future Wolverine.
Shackleford is a wide receiver with blazing speed out of Keystone High School in Northeast Ohio. Just to show how much speed and explosiveness Ryne has, he won the D2 state championship in the 100 (10.62), 200 (21.31), and the long jump (24′ 1.5″). When Shackelford lines up at wide receiver there must be a hint of fear in the back of the mind of the opposing defensive back. If they give the proper respect and back off, he has a catch and a chance to pick up yards in the underneath. If you test your luck and press up a little and get a good turn and run, he’s going to run right past you. Shackelford has also been used in reverses and as a returner on special teams where he is a threat to take it the distance. Shackleford will need to add some weight, but he has the frame to do it. New Boilermaker offensive coordinator Graham Harrell will have a big-time vertical threat to game plan with.
Highlights
Rivera is a mountain of a young man. At 6’7 320 pounds Rivera already possesses the kind of frame Power 5 coaches are looking for. Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano definitely took notice and offered Rivera. Rivera would commit to the Scarlet Knights. For a lineman of his size, Dominic moves really well. He does a good job of getting to the second level. He also does a great job with slide step when blocking in zone stretch plays. He’s physical at the point of attack and does a good job of finishing his blocks. He feels like a perfect fit Schiano and an offense that wants to control the ball and punish defenses. Dominic should continue to get stronger and build upon that sturdy frame as he hopes to find his way onto the field.
Lowry finished out his high school career by leading his Canfield Cardinals to a 14-1 record and it’s first state football championship in school history. Lowry did so, by using his arms and legs. In the run game Lowry does a good job of executing the zone read run making timely decisions of when to keep it and when to hand it off. Also does a good job of carrying out play-action fakes. Broc has the arm strength to throw it deep but is also very comfortable being a ball distributor. While his running ability will continue to be an asset for him, I expect him to continue to develop as a quarterback in making his reads and getting the ball out quickly.
