Continue ReadingWe’re keeping things moving with the 7A IHSA State Championship game with Mount Carmel and Batavia in this action that has D1 prospects on both sides of the ball along with talents for the D2, NAIA, and D3 levels. Mount Carmel got off to a hot start going up 28-0 going into the 2nd but Batavia was able to respond getting on the board in the 2nd. It was all Mount Carmel from here as they went on to win 44 to 20. With that being said, there are talented young men on both teams and we’re here to highlight these young men. Without further ado, let’s dive into the Batavia Standouts.

Mr. Jansey is as dominant as they come as an inside linebacker in this state and the University of Wisconsin commit finished the night with 12 carries for 42 yards, 9 tackles, and 1.0 TFLs. On offense Batavia utilizes him as a downhill runner to stay ahead of the sticks. On defense, he can work gap to gap and can make open field tackles on the perimeter as well as has the ability to slip blocks to disrupt plays in the backfield. He’s one heck of a player and although he wasn’t able to finish of his high school career with a state championship for his school, he’s going to take his talents to the next level and continue to make his impact felt each time he steps on the field.
Highlights
Mr. Sadowsky is the other dominant linebacker Batavia has in their core that’s committed to Iowa State University. He finished the night with 2 tackles and 0.5 TFLs as he spent most of the night taking run blocks head on. This resulted in the ball carrier bouncing the play outside giving his teammates time to rally to the ball. As he was working gap to gap along side Mr. Jansey, they were able to hold down the interior runs between the tackles forcing outside the tackle runs to the perimeter. All in all, this young man is one heck of a run stopping linebacker that has a bright future ahead of him as he moves to the next level.
Highlights
Mr. Whitwell is an athlete that can get it done on both sides of the ball. Coming into this season he primarily worked as a defensive back but took over the starting halfback role as well. Here, he can play through contact by keeping his feet driving and refusing to go down upon initial contact. He’s also a shifty type of runner once he gets into open space using his body control to evade tacklers not to mention that he can be used in the air attack securing the catch out of the backfield too. On defense, he’s the same caliber player flying to the ball and taking good breaks to make a play on any given moment. This is how he finished the night with 14 carries for 57 yards with 1 TD, 5 returns for 20 yards, 6 tackles, 0.5 TFLs, and 1 PBU. Currently only holds two offers but I would expect this to increase once teams turn on his full season highlights.
Mr. Boe finished the night 16/31 for 148 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. His stats don’t tell the full picture of his skill set and what this young man can do. He can make level 1 throws outside the numbers, make throws in tight coverage adding extra velocity on the ball, and keeps his eyes downfield when working on the move to keep the chains moving. What stands out the most is his ability to zip the ball between multiple defenders as he did this on more than one occasion to convert on scoring drives for his team. It’s not that often that you see young gunslingers confident and poised enough to to zip balls in such tight coverage. Not to mention he flashes his ability to navigate the pocket making rushing defenders miss initially giving him time to find his man downfield. It’s crazy to think that this young man has no offers given his skill set. Get eyes on him now.
Highlights
Charlie Whelpley
Charlie Whelpley
Mr. Whelpley finished the night with 6 receptions for 61 yards, 8 carries for 35 yards and 1 TD. This young man can go up for 50/50 balls on deep shots downfield to secure contested catches and once he gets into open space uses his elusiveness to make defenders miss. He also has foot quicks through the hole flashing his ability to gain a step on 2nd level defenders at times and was able to drive his legs through contact when he was in at halfback. One key trait to keep an eye on is his ability to hold onto the ball after taking heavy hits to move the sticks in the air attack. It’s not that often that you see ball carries hold onto the ball after taking a heavy hit going across the middle of the field at the HS level. Currently holds no offers but expect this to chance as we get closer to his senior season campaign as he holds some interest from the FBS and FCS level.
CJ Valente
CJ Valente
Mr. Valente works as a tight end and finished the night with 2 receptions for 22 yards and 1 TD. This young man came through on a check and release seam route for 6 at the end of the 2nd. His involvement blocking in-line for his teammates comes as no surprise as he has a good frame standing at 6’5 195 which he uses to his advantage when down blocking and drive blocking. He also is a stellar basketball player as well showcasing his dual sport athleticism. Keep an eye on this young man as he has a long reach to play above the rim and can move well.
Mr. Nekolny had his hands full going up against FBS caliber prospects lined up in the box all night long. Safe to say that there were a handful of times where he was able to hold his own and win the reps against this stout Mount Carmel defense. This young man was able to wash defensive lineman down and got solid pushes up front when drive blocking at times all with his strong punch at the point of attack. He can also kick out the defensive end when he’s pulling as a lead blocking creating a lane for the ball carrier to hit. In terms of his pass protection, he was able to mirror rushing defenders to keep the pocket clean for his QB at times by staying square and getting out of his stance quickly set to block. Projects as an IOL at the next level and technically sound he’s as good as they come. Get eyes on this young man.
