Players of the Week
Evan Sauget, Berthoud Spartans (RB/WR)(Sr.)(1) – Sauget was easily the state’s top rushing performer last week in the Spartan’s 38-21 win over the Steamboat Springs Sailors and what’s even more shocking about his performance is that tailback isn’t even his normal position; to this point in the season, he’s almost entirely played receiver for the Spartans. Diving into his all-world numbers from his night against the Steamboat defense, Sauget accounted for an unbelievable 262 yards rushing and 3 rushing touchdowns on just 13 carries (20.2 YPC). The fact that this kid gained 20 yards or more every time he touched the ball is just stupid production. Diving into the tape from Sauget’s performance against the Sailors defense, you can see, despite having limited experience at the tailback position, he displays incredible patience and vision when working to find space as a ball carrier. Shows great balance at the point-of-attack when making contact with the opposing defender, almost never being brought down by attempted arm tackles. Highly explosive, one-cut runner that can hit top gear quickly. Shows great top-end foot speed, consistently being able to pull away from most 2nd and 3rd level defenders in the open field. Plays with good physicality and power behind his pads when running between the tackles, consistently churning out extra yards after contact with the defender. Sauget isn’t currently ranked on any recruiting boards with the lower level of competition probably explaining why, but regardless, he is an incredibly talented player that will look to finish his prep career with a state title.
Brian Dykstra Brian Dykstra 5'11" | 165 lbs | ATH Northglenn | 2023 State CO , Northglenn Norsemen (WR/DB)(Sr.)(5) – Dykstra, in my humble opinion, was the most dominant offensive player in the state last week in the Norsemen’s 54-7 beatdown of the Westminster Wolves. Dykstra contributed in just about every way possible, as he accounted for a remarkable 186 yards receiving and 3 receiving touchdowns on 7 receptions (26.6 YPR) as well as 28 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown, while also adding 4 tackles and an interception on the defensive side of the ball. When you put on the film of Dykstra’s night against the Westminster defense, you can see he displays the ability to win from both the slot and on the boundary. Highly explosive athlete that can quickly get on top of the opposing DB with a quick release and great top-end foot speed. Savvy receiver that shows a good understanding of how to attack the opposing DB’s leverage when working sharp-breaking short and intermediate routes. Tough receiver that can make the tough receptions over the middle in the teeth of the defense. Shows elite concentration and tracking ability, as he routinely makes tough catches at every level of the field with the opposing defender draped all over him. Deceptive physicality and aggression allow him to win against more physical DBs and defenders while also allowing him to maintain the edge while blocking defenders on the perimeter in run scenarios. Displays excellent ability after the catch, routinely making the first defender miss and finding space at the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense. Dykstra is currently unranked in the class of 2023 and it’s pretty mind-boggling that he isn’t because he has the tape, athleticism, and production that indicate a collegiate level player. He deserves at least some recruiting buzz, especially after the incredible final performance of his prep career.
Austyn Modrzewski Austyn Modrzewski 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB Mountain Vista | 2025 State CO , Mountain Vista Golden Eagles (QB)(So.)(13) – Despite the tough 49-35 loss to the Valor Christian Eagles and several shaky interceptions early, Modrzewski still had one of the more prolific nights of any passer in Week 10. Modrzewski fought tooth-and-nail to keep Mountain Vista in the game, as he finished 18 of 33 (55%) for 333 yards passing and 2 passing touchdowns against 3 interceptions, and a QBR of 71.9. When you watch Modrzewski’s performance against the Valor Christian defense on film, the first thing that jumps out is his ball placement and overall accuracy, as his passes are consistently hitting his receivers in stride or in between defenders who are sitting in zone coverage. Poised passer that displays good pocket presence and is not easily rattled by the opposing pass rush. Highly intelligent QB that can quickly work through his progressions. Good understanding of structure and how to break it when forced to ad-lib. Displays good arm strength that allows him to make most throws at every level of the field. Shows a good ability to throw on the run, outside the pocket, and from different arm angles. Modrzewski is currently ranked the number 3 QB in the state for the class of 2025 and it’s easy to see why. He has the size (6’4 185lbs), the tape, and the production that you could want from a blue-chip QB prospect. He’ll definitely be a name worth following as the Golden Eagles work to claim a state title to close out the 2022 season.
