With a final score of 61-49, Cy-Fair held on to secure the victory and knock off the undefeated Falcons. Here are the standout Players of the Game.
Cy-Fair Bobcats
Zaccheas Baynes
Zaccheas Baynes
If you read any of my articles, you know I only put a player’s size for one reason: to emphasize their playing ability. Let me tell you folks, Baynes may have been the smallest on the field, but he might have been the toughest! Heart over height baby! Baynes was feisty, fighting for every yard he could. His best attribute was his elusiveness. He was very shifty and made defenders completely miss. His cuts were extremely quick and if you were step for step with him, he would leave you in the dust. One thing that really stood out to me, and I think will help him in a position change, was his hands! He caught a 56 yard bomb over the should! It was effortless. I believe he will move to slot receiver with his quickness and catching ability at the next level. The senior finished the game with 125 yds on 133 carries. Add 3 touchdowns to that. But wait…there more! Baynes also caught two passes for 92 yds and another touchdown. Baynes had a really productive night!
Jamel Nickerson
Jamel Nickerson
Nickerson was the primary back to enter the game to sub out Baynes. The offense did not miss a beat. 34 ran tough, but he was more of a finesse runner. He saw a hole and did not hesitate, accelerating to the second and third level quickly. Nickerson almost eclipse 100 yards (98) on just 8 carries……you guys did not read that correctly…I stated that his junior back almost rushed for 100 yards with only 8 carries! He averaged 12.3 yards per carry. Unfortunately, he did not reach the endzone at all, but he helped his team in a major way. The Bobcats backfield will be in good hands with after Baynes graduates. Nickerson has all the tools to be the bell cow back for his team next season!
Jersey Village Falcons
I wanted to start with the man that kept his team in the game, especially late in the game! Tran played a heck of a football game, with loads of adversity in his way! His offensive line was not the best group of linemen I have seen this season, and his receivers dropped 3+ passes (we counted), but that did not stop Tran from slinging the football all over the field. He was decently accurate, especially throws that were in the 15-20 yard range. Some passes were thrown where only his receivers could catch it. It was not a flawless game from the junior quarterback though, as she threw two interceptions, one being a costly game ceiling pick in the endzone. Even on that throw, I was not mad at the decision. His receiver was one-on-one on a 9 route (meaning a straight go for my folks still learning football terminology). The pass should have been thrown more to the outside, or a high point pass, but instead it was slightly inside for the DB to pick it off. Plays like that you can learn from. Overall, Tran led his team to what could have been an epic comeback, and made enough plays to keep them competitive. The junior ended the night completing 25 of 41 passes, for 506 yards, with a passer rating of .61%, along with 4 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. There was a lot to like about his performance!
Highlights
Arbrie Carter
Arbrie Carter
Tran’s favorite target easily was Carter! The senior lined up at every receiver position, and was effective/caught a pass at each one. Carter’s routes were decent, relying on his speed mostly. He was not a blazer, but had enough speed to outrun defends if he had a step on them. He had very good hands and was able to make people miss after the catch. I believe that slightly hurt him, as he was a culprit of a couple drops. His drops were more of a concentration thing, looking away from the ball, eager to turn up field and make a play. You can’t truly be mad at that, it’s a pretty easy fix, especially form watching him in the past. Dropping passes is not a habit for Carter, trust me. When the ball his is his hands, he is liable to score on any given play! Being Tran’s go to receiver, Carter caught 10 passes, for 213 yards, and 1 touchdown. His longest reception was 70 yards. They did not win, but Carter played a good game!
This game had everything you could have asked for: the underdog knocking off the unbeaten team, high scoring, nail biters, big plays, game ending final drive, etc.. I am glad I chose to go to this game! Bot teams played their guts out, with Cy-Fair coming out victorious! See you guys next time.
