Every single Monday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll get the week started with a look at the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. And this week, we have some absolutely great match-ups across the state. This week, our games are headlined by the fact that district play is officially opening up! Games start counting this week towards playoff seeding in November and wins and losses mean that much more moving forward. Check back every Monday as we break down the top ten games every single week during the 2022 regular season.
1) #3 MUSKOGEE (3-0) AT #6 SAND SPRINGS (2-1)
This week’s top match-up takes place in 6A-2 as #6 Sand Springs hosts #3 Muskogee. The Sandites bounced back from a loss to Bixby by beating Ponca City last week while Muskogee had a bye week to prepare for district play. The Roughers have backed up the preseason hype in July and August with their 3-0 start. Despite going 2-8 in 2021, we had the Roughers in the top five in our preseason rankings and they have played like a top five team so far this season. The Roughers bring in one of the top young quarterbacks in the state with sophomore Jamarian Ficklin Jamarian Ficklin 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Muskogee | 2025 State OK . The Sandites might have a young gunslinger themselves with freshman Easton Webb Easton Webb 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Charles Page | 2026 State OK , who is now splitting reps with Marek Matheson Marek Matheson 6'2" | 220 lbs | QB Sand Springs | 2023 OK . The winner here has to be be considered a serious district title threat in 6A-2.
2) #3 TUTTLE (2-1) AT #6 BETHANY (3-0)
In arguably the toughest district in Class 4A, #3 Tuttle opens up district play on the road against #6 Bethany. Tuttle is off to a 2-1 start after dropping a tough game to Guthrie in week three. Bethany is off to a 3-0 start and they’ve been led by senior star Taylor Heim Taylor Heim 6'4" | 185 lbs | ATH Bethany | 2023 State OK . We’re looking forward to seeing how Heim and Bethany look against one of the better 4A programs over the last five seasons. Heim is an absolute superstar and does so many things at a very high level. He’s had several games where he’s thrown, run for and caught a touchdown. And he also leads the team in interceptions on defense. Tuttle will counter with their senior quarterback Mason Dennis Mason Dennis 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Tuttle | 2023 State OK , who was outstanding on Friday night against Guthrie. As long as the Tigers can avoid critical drops in the passing game, they’ll have a shot to put up some points.
3) #4 HOMINY (3-0) AT #7 PAWNEE (3-0)
Speaking of tough districts, here’s a match-up in arguably the toughest district in Class A. #4 Hominy hits the road to face #7 Pawnee in a game where the loser is going to have to scratch and claw to make the playoffs in a district that also features tough teams like Morrison, Tonkawa and Woodland. Both teams are off to 3-0 starts as the Bucks have looked really strong early on behind star quarterback Jaxon Woods Jaxon Woods 6'0" | ATH Hominy | 2024 State OK , who is very quickly becoming one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in Class A. And we’ve seen a Hominy dual-threat quarterback lead his team to a title in the last decade. Meanwhile, Pawnee is coming off a shootout win over Meeker and we’ll learn a lot about the Black Bears in the next three weeks. They play Hominy, Tonkawa and Woodland in three straight weeks. Fortunately, they’re all at home.
4) #1 UNION (3-0) AT #4 OWASSO (1-2)
Few teams in the state have looked as dominant as Union over the first three weeks of the season. The Redhawks will look to continue that dominant start on the road as they take on Owasso. The Rams were slow out of the gate with losses to Bixby and Jenks but bounced back in week two with a road win over Broken Arrow. Union definitely comes into this district clash as the favorite but we’ve seen some very close outcomes in this match-up over the last few seasons. The Rams are looking to find their identity on the offensive side of the ball behind senior quarterback Mason Willingham Mason Willingham 6'1" | QB Owasso | 2023 State OK , who has really improved over the last 12 months. Meanwhile, when you look at Union, there aren’t very many weaknesses on both sides of the ball but they’ll have another test on Friday.
5) #9 KINGFISHER (2-1) AT #8 PERKINS-TRYON (2-1)
The top game in Class 3A this week has #8 Perkins-Tryon hosting #9 Kingfisher. Both teams come in with 2-1 records. Kingfisher had week three off after their 2-1 start and on the same night, Perkins-Tryon made quite the statement. They went on the road and handed Marlow their first regular season loss since 2019. The Demons looked dominant in that one and they’ll look to keep that going this week as they welcome in tradition-rich Kingfisher. The Yellowjackets will focus on keeping Perkins-Tryon junior star Tre Stevenson Tre Stevenson 6'0" | ATH Perkins-Tryon | 2024 State OK wrapped up and not having too much of an impact on Friday. Stevenson is an outstanding running back and he proved last week that he can be a terror on the defensive side as well. The winner here stays alive for the district title while the loser will have a lot of work to do.
6) SOUTHEAST (3-0) AT #10 PIEDMONT (3-1)
We believe that this district in Class 5A is the toughest in the state, regardless of class. Four teams from the same district are in the top ten and then you have Southeast, who is 3-0 and has absolutely smashed all three of their opponents this season. #10 Piedmont hosts Southeast on Friday night in the district opener and we’ll learn more about both teams in this game. Piedmont’s run-heavy offense will try to control the ball to keep Southeast’s offensive playmakers on the sidelines and the Spartans are looking to keep their high-scoring ways going on the road. We like the Spartans and some of their playmakers but Friday’s road game is without a doubt the toughest game they’ve had all year. Are the Spartans and those playmakers for real or will Piedmont get a much-needed district win?
7) #5 CASHION (1-2) AT #10 MINCO (4-0)
Another Class A clash that features two top ten teams has #5 Cashion traveling to face #10 Minco. Cashion is coming into this match-up with a rare 1-2 record but it’s not that hard to figure out when you look at the combination of new starters and tough non-district schedule. Nevertheless, this is still a really good football team and have to be considered a top five team right now in Class A. The Wildcats are back to back state champs and they expect to be in the mix when the playoffs roll around. Before we get to November, they have to take care of district play first and that means tangling with a Minco team that has a lot of momentum coming into this week. The dual-threat abilities of their junior quarterback will make them a tough team to slow down on the offensive side of the ball.
8) HOLLAND HALL (0-3) AT #5 CASCIA HALL (2-1)
The annual “Hall Brawl” rivalry game between Cascia Hall and Holland Hall has a little more riding on it this year. With Cascia Hall moving back up to Class 3A, this has now become a district game and the Commandos come into this week as the favorite to knock off the rival Dutch for the first time since 2018, when they won 23-20. The Dutch have dominated this match-up ever since and have been a force in Class 3A over the last two years, winning back to back titles. But graduation has hit the Dutch hard. We knew that they might take a step back this fall after contending the last two years but we did not anticipate an 0-3 start to the season. The Dutch are still looking to find their identity and Friday is going to be another tough game as they go on the road to take on an experienced Cascia squad.
9) EUFAULA (2-1) AT #9 SPIRO (2-1)
In this Class 2A clash, Eufaula hits the road to take on Spiro to open up district play. Spiro is coming off their first loss of the season after falling to Muldrow last week, who made their debut in the Class 3A rankings over the weekend. As for Eufaula, they have bounced back after losing their season opener to Vian with back to back wins over Tahlequah Sequoyah and Checotah. Eufaula and Spiro might be the top teams within this district. You have to also include Idabel in this conversation. But the winner here should be considered in the driver’s seat while the loser is going to have to scratch and claw and potentially get some help to keep district title hopes alive. Eufaula will look to torch Spiro with their star quarterback Luke Adcock Luke Adcock 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Eufaula | 2023 State OK after Muldrow beat Spiro with the running game.
10) #2 BIXBY (3-0) AT #8 NORMAN NORTH (2-1)
One of the biggest storylines heading into this football season was Bixby moving up to 6A-1 after dominating 6A-2 for eight seasons. The Spartans bring a 52-game winning streak into this week’s match-up with Norman North. While the Spartans opened the season against Owasso, the real trek into 6A-1 begins this week as they enter district play and face 6A-1 competition week after week. The Spartans have proven so far that they won’t miss a step with the move up to 6A-1. Meanwhile, on the other side of this match-up, Norman North is looking to bounce back after a stunning loss to Yukon in week three. The Millers were able to run up and down the field on the Norman North defense and the Spartans will look to take a page out of that book as they look to win number 53 in a row.
