As we head into a new season of youth and middle school football around the country, below is a look at some class of 2027 prospects (athletes beginning their eighth-grade school year) that have come across my desk. As football recruiting and evaluating continues to change, the eighth-grade season is becoming a pivotal time for young athletes to garner early attention from Universities. Here’s a look at some prospects that are on the trajectory to be playing a high level of football for years to come.
Morris is a big-bodied lineman who currently checks in a 6-foot-3 and tips the scales at 285-pounds. He’s a dominant force for the 757 Colts organization out of Norfolk. The rising 8th grader picked up his first Power Five offer earlier this week as he added an offer from the Maryland Terrapins. On film, Morris does a great job using his size and strength to his advantage as he’s often seen driving defenders either downfield or into the ground. He does a great job using leverage and opening up wide running lanes for his running backs.
Jaylen “JigStick” Huff is no stranger to the internet. The 5-foot-7, 130-pound athlete saw his workout film go viral in 2017 and the spotlight has been on him ever since. Boasting more than 46,000 followers on Instagram, Huff is a versatile athlete who excels with the ball in his hands. He runs great routes, has the ability to take the top off a defense and the quickness and elusiveness to breakaway from defenders. He’s a sure-handed receiver who has the ability to take it to the house everytime he touches the ball.
Glover, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound tight end is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. On tape, Glover showcases good straight line speed and a knack for finding the football. He does a nice job highpointing the ball when the coverage is tight and sitting down in the hole when facing zone defenses. His coaches do a great job utilizing his size and speed and often find ways to move him around to create mismatches. He’s a name to keep an eye on as he could have the potential to be the top tight end in the Keystone State over the next several seasons.
Highlights
Holley is one of the top young signal callers in the Sunshine State as the 6-foot-2, 160-pound quarterback possesses a strong arm which helps him make all the necessary throws. He stands tall in the pocket, moves around effortlessly and isn’t afraid to tuck the ball and run if needed. He has good vision, great anticipation and can get the ball out in a hurry. He attended five camps this summer and took home MVP honors in all five. He’s already received some playing time on the varsity level this season for Northside Christian and he’ll most likely become one of the top signal callers in the state in the next two or three years.
Highlights
Rankin is a true dual-threat quarterback. He does a nice job in the short to intermediate routes but where Rankin excels is with the ball in his hands. He has the speed and vision to rattle off large chunk plays and his coaches do a nice job setting up his runs. He quickly hits the hole on draw plays and has the speed to get to the edge and past the defense. He’s a matchup nightmare for opposing coaches as they have to respect the passing game but also need to find a way to contain the versatile athlete.
Morgan is a 6’foot, 165-pound linebacker who has a knack for finding the football. He’s constantly flying all over the field, moving around along the line of scrimmage and does a nice job fighting through contact and locating the ball carrier. He’s instinctive in the box as a run defender and is quick to read and react and isn’t afraid to put his facemask into someone. If he can continue to hone his skills and add some mass he could be one of the top linebackers in the state.
