Jake Dehaan was electric tonight, and South Christian made plays when they had to. This is a gutsy win, and a statement to every program in the State of Michigan. South Christian is here, and they’re a legit state-championship contender.
Defensive-Run First Half
Defense was the name of the game in half #1.
The first quarter was a slugfest, and a bit sloppy with plenty of penalties. The game began with a GRCC punt, then South Christian stalling at their own goalline.
Then, in the 2nd quarter, both teams got more comfortable. The first score was a 23-yard TD pass from Connor Wolf Connor Wolf 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI to Billy Mikolay, then South Christian answered with a 35-yard TD pass from Jake Dehaan to Seth Ritsema.
At the half, the score was 7-6 South Christian, with both coaching staffs looking visibly frustrated.
A dramatic 2nd-half
The second half was dramatic, full of scores, penalties, and game-changing moments.
It was obvious that both teams had enhanced their offensive game plans at halftime. With 5:00 to go in the 3rd, the Sailors bring the magic and run what I like to call the Sailor Special, a play very similar to the famous Philly Special.
Next, Connor Wolf Connor Wolf 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI answered with a dime to Michael App. With a successful 2-point conversion, the score was tied at 14.
It was a special 4th-quarter, and one of the most exhilerating I’ve ever watched.
After the Michael App TD and GRCC’s defense getting a stop, all the momentum was with the Cougars.
Then, Jake Dehhan picks Wolf off for 6. The place gets ROCKING, and the Sailors take a 21-14 lead.
GRCC then drives down the field, and gets stopped at the goalline. But wait! A late PI flag turns the 4th-down stop into a 1st and goal, and GRCC quickly punches it in. 21-21. But WAIT AGAIN! Jackson Haik takes the ensuing kickoff to the house! And just like that South Christian took a 28-21 lead with 5:00 left in the 4th.
GRCC Gets the ball back, and elects to score as quickly as they can instead of running the clock. An interesting move, but they scored with 1:52 remaining, bit missed the critical extra point. With a failed onside kick, it was Sailor football with a first down to win it.
Instead of a first-down, Jake Dehaan goes 80 yards to the house.
At this point, there’s less than a minute remaining and the Cougars are down by 9. Connor Wolf Connor Wolf 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI is able to deliver a dime to Jami Williams, but they needed to try a onside kick for a chance at heroics.
The onside kick failed, and the celebration was on for the Sailors!
Postgame was a sea of happy Sailors and frenzying students and media.
