IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Cascia Hall Holds Off Victory Christian
Cascia Hall was able to escape south Tulsa with a 26-21 win over Victory Christian but the Commandos would have to hold on for dear life in the final four minutes of the game. Cascia Hall would lead 19-0 after three quarters and would then go up 26-0 in the fourth quarter. And in the final four minutes, the Conquerors almost pulled off a miracle to open the season. They would score their first touchdown with just under four minutes to play. On the next possession, Cascia Hall would fumble it away and Victory would score again in less than a minute after their first touchdown. The Conquerors would then recover an onside kick and strike again to pull within a possession. Victory would get one last chance to take the lead with a little less than two minutes to play but they were pinned at their own 5 yard line and couldn’t drive the length of the field as Cascia Hall escaped. The Commandos will play another tough 2A team when #3 Rejoice Christian comes to town for Cascia Hall’s home opener in week one.
Del City Knocks Off #1 Choctaw
While a lot of 5A eyes were on the top five showdown in Coweta between the Tigers and Carl Albert, another 5A team made plenty of noise as they opened up the season at home with a 38-34 win over 6A-2’s #1 Choctaw. The Eagles would use a strong passing attack and a defense that bent but did not break in the final minutes to get out with the win. The Eagles relied on their stars to play big in the big season opener. Kansas State commit Kanijal Thomas Kanijal Thomas 6'1" | DB Del City | 2023 State OK , who is one of the top defensive backs in the state was Del City’s leading receiver and he caught three touchdowns and also had an interception on defense. Oklahoma State defensive end commit Jaedon Foreman Jaedon Foreman 6'4" | DL Del City | 2023 State OK also caught a touchdown as he played on both sides of the ball. The Eagles will look to take this momentum into another game against a top 6A-2 team in week one. They’ll travel to Tulsa to face Booker T Washington, who is coming off a loss to Bentonville West in Arkansas.
Jenks Escapes Edmond With Win
It wasn’t pretty as the two-time defending champs opened up the 2022 campaign but they would escape Edmond with a 13-10 win over Edmond Santa Fe. In a game that used to be a district match-up, these two opened the season against one another and it was close throughout. Both offenses struggled throughout the game but defensive back Cole Whittington would return an Edmond Santa Fe interception for the what would be the game-winning touchdown. The Trojans would have to use several running backs in the win after star running back Jaiden Carroll Jaiden Carroll 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Jenks | 2023 State OK was ejected from the game late in the second quarter. The Trojans will look to improve in the next few days as their tough non-district schedule continues. They’ll return home to face Owasso before hitting the road for a potential 1 VS 2 match-up against arch rival Union, in what will be one of the more anticipated Backyard Bowls in recent memory.
Lincoln Christian Dominates State Title Rematch
Lincoln Christian had their season end at the hands of Holland Hall in 2020 and 2021 in the state championship game. While the Dutch claimed the gold ball, Lincoln had to settle for silver and the top ranked Bulldogs were going to leave no doubt in the championship rematch on Friday night. From the opening kick off, the Bulldogs began their onslaught at the expense of the Dutch. Griffin Dyer Griffin Dyer 5'10" | 165 lbs | DB Lincoln Christian | 2023 OK would take the opening kick back for a touchdown and the Bulldogs were off to the races from there. 2024 quarterback Luke Milligan Luke Milligan 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Lincoln Christian | 2024 State OK was nearly perfect throwing the ball and the Bulldogs would roll to a 56-7 victory over the two-time defending champs. Lincoln certainly made a statement as the #1 team in Class 3A after beating up the reigning champs.
Stillwater Handles Arkansas Powerhouse
Stillwater opened up the year at home against Arkansas powerhouse Greenwood. The Pioneers would score early and often and the outcome was never really in doubt as they would knock off Greenwood 41-27. The offensive combination of 2023 quarterback Gage Gundy Gage Gundy 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Stillwater | 2023 State OK and 2023 running back Noah Roberts Noah Roberts 5'7" | 155 lbs | RB Stillwater | 2023 State OK was not going to be stopped on Friday night. Gundy was outstanding throwing the ball, he had a perfect first half and also did some damage on the ground. Roberts had plenty of success running the ball as the Pioneers dominated the line of scrimmage. And with Choctaw and Booker T Washington both losing on Friday night, the Pioneers find themselves as the new #1 team in Class 6A-2 as they head into week one.
Washington Runs All Over Vian In Top Five Showdown
Class 2A’s top ranked Washington made quite a statement to the rest of Class 2A as they went on the road and knocked off Vian 39-24 in a match-up of top five teams, and it wasn’t that close. The Warriors would score their first touchdown about halfway through the first quarter and the floodgates would open from there. Washington would lead 26-0 at halftime and that hole was too much for the Wolverines to overcome. This was supposed to be a marquee running back match-up but the Warriors came in and did an excellent job containing Vian in the first half. They would finish with well under 50 yards on the ground in the first two quarters. Vian would start rolling on offense in the second half but it was too little too late for Vian.
