Every single Monday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll get the week started with a look at the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. And this week, we have some absolutely great match-ups across the state. We will be seeing plenty of top five and top ten teams square off with other ranked teams from different classes. We also have a few top ten clashes in 6A-1 this week as well. Check back every Monday as we break down the top ten games every single week during the 2022 regular season.
1) 5A’s #1 Coweta (1-0) AT 4A’s #2 Wagoner (0-0)
One week after knocking off Carl Albert in impressive fashion Coweta will have to avoid an immediate let down when they travel to face rival Wagoner in the Highway 51 rivalry game. After knocking off the Titans, the Tigers rose up to the top spot in the most recent Class 5A rankings and Wagoner comes into this season as the #2 team in Class 4A. The Bulldogs did not play in week zero and Friday will be their season opener and this is one that they’ve been waiting on for a while now. Wagoner had their winning streak against Coweta snapped last year as the Tigers handled business in a dominating win. The Bulldogs will certainly have revenge on their mind. It’s clear that both teams are state title caliber squads so this is going to be a great game on the field, in addition to the rivalry game aspect that makes it the top match-up in week one.
2) 2A’s #3 Rejoice Christian (1-0) AT 3A’s #6 Cascia Hall (1-0)
This will without a doubt be a clash of styles when Rejoice Christian and their high-powered offense comes to Tulsa to face Cascia Hall and the “Blue Swarm” defense, along with their ground and pound offense. Both teams were impressive in week zero and have some momentum coming into week one. Rejoice Christian went on the road and dominated two-time defending Class A champion Cashion and looked great on the offensive side of the ball. Meanwhile Cascia Hall took care of business for three and a half quarters against Victory Christian and would have to hold off a furious rally from the Conquerors to get the win. It’s pretty easy to see what the biggest key in this game is. If Cascia Hall can control the ball on offense and keep Rejoice’s high-powered offense on the sidelines, they could get a big win Friday night.
3) 4A’s #5 Clinton (1-0) AT 5A’2 #2 Bishop McGuinness (1-0)
It’s another match-up featuring top five teams in Class 5A and 4A as Bishop McGuinness will host defending Class 4A champion Clinton. McGuinness got their season off to a great start in week zero by taking care of Putnam City. The offense exploded for 52 points as they had a great mix of passing and running the football. Clinton knocked off Kingfisher in their opener and the defending 4A champs will hit the road to OKC to take on the Irish. This is a great 5A/4A match-up and a good measuring stick game for both sides of the game. McGuinness is one of the favorites in Class 5A and they’re certainly testing themselves in non-district play before entering arguably the toughest district in the state. Meanwhile Clinton won the gold ball last year but have plenty of new faces coming into this season.
4) 3A’s #3 Heritage Hall (0-0) AT 2A’s #4 Millwood (0-0) (Thursday)
This game has become quite the season opener over the last few years as 3A’s #3 Heritage Hall will travel a few miles east to face 2A’s #4 Millwood on Thursday night. This game has turned out to be one of the marquee non-district match-ups as both teams are usually in the contender conversation and usually find themselves in the top five of their respective class. Both teams will open the season on Thursday night and look to get some momentum early on in the 2022 season. Millwood is looking to turn things around after a rare season of missing the playoffs in 2021. They’re also looking to turn around things against the Chargers, who have been dominant against the Falcons in the last couple seasons. The Chargers once again play a tough non-district schedule and it will start on Thursday with a road game against Millwood.
5) 5A’s #3 Del City (1-0) AT 6A-2’s #3 Booker T Washington (0-1)
Similar to the Heritage Hall-Millwood match-up, this one has become quite the marquee non-district match-up early on in each season. Booker T Washington will host Del City in a game featuring some of the best players in the state. Three of the top twelve prospects in our 2023 rankings will be on the field Friday night as the Hornets look to bounce back following their week zero loss to Bentonville West. Del City meanwhile is coming off a big win at home against Choctaw, who was ranked #1 in 6A-2. This game has had a lot of juice over the last few years because both teams have been in the same class, in addition to being one of the better teams in said class. But with Del City dropping down to Class 5A, that’s no longer the case. But this should still be one of the best games as these two have been incredibly competitive over the last few years.
6) #5 Owasso (0-1) AT #2 Jenks (1-0)
It’s the renewal of a rivalry as Owasso hits the road to take on two-time defending champion Jenks in week one. The Rams and Trojans last played in the regular season in 2017 and have only met in the playoffs ever since. Owasso is coming off a loss to Bixby in week zero while Jenks escaped Edmond with a very close win over Santa Fe. Both teams are wanting to improve coming into this match-up and get some momentum before big rivalry games in week two. For Owasso, they are continuing their gauntlet of a schedule as they face the top three teams in the 6A-1 rankings in three of their first four games. For Jenks, the Trojans will be without star running back Jaiden Carroll Jaiden Carroll 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Jenks | 2023 State OK after he was ejected and suspended following the Edmond Santa Fe game.
7) A’s #5 Cashion (0-1) AT 2A’s #6 Pawhuska (1-0)
This match-up had to make the list after what we’ve seen from these two teams in the last two seasons. Cashion would knock off Pawhuska in the 2020 and 2021 semifinal rounds. Both games would go down to the wire and be decided by less than ten points. However, this week one clash will be the only time we see this match-up. Pawhuska moves up to Class 2A this fall so they won’t be meeting in the playoffs. Cashion is looking to bounce back after falling to 2A offensive power Rejoice Christian. Pawhuska had no problems in week zero and put up plenty of points. Cashion could be in trouble as they face yet another high-powered offense that can put up a lot of points and have a D1 quarterback leading the way. However, if the last two seasons taught us anything, these two teams could be primed for an instant classic.
8) #1 Union (1-0) AT #7 Broken Arrow (0-1)
In another marquee 6A-1 match-up, top-ranked Union will go on the road to face #7 Broken Arrow in the renewal of this rivalry. The Redhawks have dominated this rivalry but it’s become much more competitive and closer over the last five years. Both teams are very familiar with one another and opened up their seasons last week. union had no problems putting up over 50 points in their win over Westmoore. Meanwhile, Broken Arrow went over to Arkansas and lost a shootout to Bentonville. The Tigers put up nearly 50 points but unfortunately they gave up over 50 points in the loss. The Tigers will look to make a statement as they return home against the Redhawks before another rivalry game with Owasso. Union will do the same thing. They have a highly-anticipated match-up with Jenks next week but must focus on week one first.
9) 2A’s #7 Jones (0-1) AT 3A’s #1 Lincoln Christian (1-0)
Another marquee non-district match-up that has become one to watch each season features Lincoln Christian hosting Jones in Tulsa. This match-up has almost exclusively featured these two teams ranked in the top ten and that’s the case once again this season. Last year, Lincoln Christian would rally to stun Jones on a game-winning field goal as time expired. Jones would score the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute to play but the Bulldogs would escape with a win. The Bulldogs have plenty of momentum coming into this match-up as well after week zero. They would go on the road and absolutely dismantle two-time defending champion Holland Hall in a rematch of the last two state championship games. Jones is looking to bounce back after going on the road and falling to Bethany.
10) 6A-1’s #6 Edmond Santa Fe (0-1) AT 6A-2’s #2 Choctaw (0-1)
It’s bounce back time for both teams as they head into this week one match-up. 6A’1’s #6 Edmond Santa Fe will hit the road to take on 6A-2’s #2 Choctaw as both teams are coming off close losses. Edmond Santa Fe nearly upset two-time defending champion Jenks at home as they fell 13-10. On the other side, the Yellowjackets lost a shootout on the road to Del City and fell from the top spot in the 6A-2 rankings. Both teams have had recent success in the playoffs and have been knocking on the door to becoming consistent state championship contenders. The good thing about this match-up is one team is going to get to bounce back and get a win. But the other team that falls short won’t be hurt in the big picture. Both teams in this game are testing themselves early with very tough non-district games.
