It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Perkins-Tryon Demons. Fresh off a run to the quarterfinals, the Demons are looking for more in 2022.
Perkins-Tryon Demons
If we had to pick a dark horse in Class 3A that’s not in the preseason top ten but is a team that could make a run this fall, we’re taking Perkins-Tryon. They’re coming off a 9-3 season and a run to the quarterfinals and they have the majority of their starters coming back. We think that Perkins-Tryon actually has a chance to be really good over the next two seasons. They change districts this fall and they’re in a district that they could walk away with the district title and it wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world. Last year, they were competitive for the district crown but lost to Heritage Hall. They don’t have to worry about the Chargers moving forward but teams like Anadarko and Metro Christian will be their top threats within the district. After losing to eventual champion Holland Hall, the Demons could be a team that goes further than ever before this fall.
We really like the group that the Demons bring back as this senior class and really the junior class as well has a lot of talent. On the offensive side of the ball, the Demons return six starters from last year’s team, including one of the top running backs in Class 3A this season. They will need to replace the quarterback but the skill players and offensive linemen returning have the chance to keep this Demon offense rolling this fall. And then you turn around and look at the defense and there’s not a lot to complain about. Nine starters return on that side of the ball. So while the new quarterback gets settled in and this offense comes along, they can rely on an experienced and talented defense to lead the way for them early on in the season. Don’t be surprised to see the Demons surprise quite a few people this fall.

. We expect a breakout season for Greene as he looks to become one of the more versatile athletes in this class. Greene is 6’0 but he first got on our radar when we watched him jump out of the gym on the basketball floor. According to Perkins-Tryon coaches, Greene has already measured a 40 inch vertical and we can definitely see him being a breakout star for the Demons on the offensive side of the ball.

. While Greene is more of a leaper, Mouton has the speed category locked down. Again, going back to the Perkins-Tryon coaches and some of the info we got this spring, Mouton is expected to be their top cornerback and has the potential to really raise his stock this fall. They like him as an absolute lockdown corner who can stay with just about any wide receiver that he’s matched up with. Having a player like Mouton at one of the cornerback spots will help the Demons when you consider some of the quarterbacks that they’ll have to face this fall.

moving forward. We did the 2024 rankings back in June and had him as the #5 running back in the class and outside the Top 50 overall. Both were mistakes. We saw Stevenson in person later in the month of June and immediately realized that he was too low. Stevenson is the real deal physically and he has the chance to be a pretty special player when it comes to running backs in the state’s 2024 class. We like Stevenson to have another big season. He ran for over 1,100 yards last year. He could double that this season.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Sept. 2 – Tecumseh
Sept. 9 – Cushing
– We mentioned some of the quarterbacks that Perkins-Tryon is going to run up against and we’ll start with Cushing in week two. The Demons will host the preseason #1 team in Class 4A in the second game of the year. Cushing has one of the more explosive offenses in Class 4A so the experienced and talented Perkins-Tryon defense will definitely be challenged here. The Tigers nearly put up 50 points in their regular season meeting a year ago. If the Demons could stun the Tigers, they’ll have everyone’s attention in Class 3A.
Sept. 16 – AT Marlow
Sept. 23 – Kingfisher
Sept. 30 – AT Metro Christian
– This begins a two-week stretch where Perkins-Tryon will play arguably the two top teams in the district and both games are on the road. In week five, they’ll travel to Tulsa to face Metro Christian and their high-powered passing attack. The week after, they’ll travel to face Anadarko. This two-week stretch is going to make or break Perkins-Tryon’s district championship chances. Going 2-0 here will put them in the driver’s seat for the district crown while going 0-2 will force them in can’t lose scenarios down the stretch.
Oct. 7 – AT Anadarko
Oct. 13 – Mount Saint Mary
Oct. 21 – AT North Rock Creek
Oct. 28 – AT McLoud
Nov. 4 – Mannford
Notable
Perkins-Tryon has made 12 consecutive trips to the playoffs as they’ve become one of the more consistent 3A programs over the last decade. However, they’re still looking to take the next step as a program. During that stretch, they’ve made it to the quarterfinal round on three occasions, including twice in the last three years. But they haven’t made it to the semifinals since 2000 and that was the only year they’ve ever made it to the final four. The Demons are right on the outside looking in on the top ten in Class 3A and we believe that they’ll eventually in the top ten at various points this season. They’re in a district where they can contend for the district crown and get a better playoff seed.
