I watched a lot of game in 2021, and with that, I saw many great defensive performances. In this article I explore the best defenders I watched during the 2021 season.
DE [player_tooltip player_id="206954" first="Timothy" last="Allen"] (Coopersville)
I still believe Tim Allen is a very underrated defensive end. The Ferris State commit showed utter dominance whenever I watched him, and you could just tell opposing offenses were doing everything they could to run away from Allen. He’s an excellent size at 6’3" 225lbs and utterly dominated the competition, though did not receive much press whatsoever.
DE [player_tooltip player_id="226712" first="Mason" last="Muragin"] (De La Salle)
Over the course of 2021, Muragin started getting attention little by little, and it’s snowballed into him being an excellent college prospect. He absolutely crushed the great Traverse City Central offensive line during the state championship. As a matter of fact, I was very impressed with the TC Central line the previous week, but I was flabbergasted to see Muragin dominate the way he did.
MLB [player_tooltip player_id="30131" first="Joshua" last="Burnham"] (Traverse City Central)
I heard so much about Burnham leading up to me finally seeing him play in a blizzard against Caledonia. Burnham is a highly-touted Notre Dame recruit for a reason, and that is his overwhelming dominance on both sides of the ball. Focusing on defense, I’ve never seen a better high school Middle Linebacker. His sideline-to-sideline coverage is amazing and he hits like an absolute truck. He will be sorely missed at Traverse City Central.
DB [player_tooltip player_id="241259" first="Bryce" last="Kurncz"] (DeWitt)
"Facing the best quarterback and receiving core in the state, Kurncz had a great game which included 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 RedZone forced fumble, a pass breakup, and a sack. He truly did everything he possibly could for his team, but they fell a yard short of defeating King." I couldn’t have said it better. Kurncz stood out at the biggest stage against the most elite competition he’s ever faced.
DB Christian Schomer (Rochester Adams)
Adams ran a ton of man coverage in 2021, and Schomer performed great all season, including a performance for the ages in the D1 Semifinals. Schomer was overall one of the biggest standout surprises I watched.
