Players from Michigan stand out every year, and these 4 guys have very bright collegiate futures, with most in our top 50 still sharpening the ax for next season for teams such as Alabama and Penn State. So now, let’s take a quick look at 4 true freshmen from the class of 2021 who stood out this season!
Michigan RB Donovan Edwards (West Bloomfield)
Edwards is a rising star who really began to shine alongside J.J. McCarthy this past season. Everything he showcased at West Bloomfield seems to have transferred excellently at Michigan and with the Maize and Blue he totaled 175 rush yards on 35 carries with 3 touchdowns, with 265 yards on 20 receptions and a touchdown. That’s more receiving yards than Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins, almost combined. Needless to say, Edwards and the Michigan football program have great futures ahead.

Michigan WR Andrel Anthony Jr (East Lansing High School)
Anthony is known for his 93-yard touchdown against the Spartans, where he had a breakout game with 6 receptions, 155 yards, and of course 1 touchdown. He’s stood out as a great deep threat with 3 touchdowns on 12 receptions, with a whopping 20.7 yards per reception. The “3-star” recruit is surpassing expectations early in his collegiate career.

Northwestern RB Anthony Tyus III (Portage Northern)
The Portage Northern product got a steady amount of carries for Northwestern, totaling 210 rushing yards and 1 TD on the season. In a busy running back room with being the youngest running back on the roster, Tyus did well as a true freshman. He’ll undoubtedly put up exponentially great numbers as his career moves along!
Central Michigan ATH D.J. Stepney (Macomb Dakota)
With a whopping 8 running backs on the CMU roster, Stepney was able to stand out a bit and earn playing time, with 109 yards on 13 carries for an amazing average of 8.4 yards per carry. His standout game was an 81-yard game against Robert Morris, with more appearances against LSU and FIU. We’ll see plenty more Stepney in the coming years as long as he continues working extremely hard.
