All year, Tuttle had dominated their opponents and rarely got bullied around. That was not the case on Friday night as Clinton came out and absolutely ran the Tigers off the field to win their 17th state championship and their first since 2002. Leading this performance was senior quarterback and linebacker Caden Powell Caden Powell 6'3" | 210 lbs | LB Clinton | 2022 State OK . The senior has been one of the better linebackers in the state for a few years now and he showed that throughout the night on Thursday. With his efforts on offense and defense, he was the easy pick for our MVP selection in the Class 4A state championship game.
Powell and the Clinton defense set the tone for how this game was going to be played in the first half. They held Tuttle to 11 yards of total offense in the first two quarters and the Tigers didn’t get a first down until their first possession of the second half. Clinton turned them over three times on interceptions that led to Clinton points. From the start, Clinton showed that they were the more dominant team.
On offense, The Red Tornadoes made it clear that they were going to rely on Powell to carry them to the win. He finished with 134 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on 26 carries. The rest of the team combined for 18 carries. Powell put the game away with his third touchdown that put Clinton up 28-0. With how the Red Tornadoes were playing on defense, Tuttle would have no hope of a comeback.
“There is no better feeling,” Powell said of winning the state title. “Where we come from, we went through a little drought. Ten years without winning one but we got one. Our fans deserve it, our town deserves it. To bring one back finally, it feels right to go out like this.”
“He’s an animal,” Clinton head coach John Higbee said of his Clinton senior. “It’s almost surprising that other colleges haven’t come in. I think he’d like to play the sport of football but there hasn’t been any division one college to show any interest. It’s kind of embarrassing. He’s an animal, he’s been doing this for a long time now. Proud of him.”
